Through the fog...
Saturday morning we went out to Botanical Beach, near Port Renfrew. We had a great
day exploring the tide pools and trying to see the Pacific Ocean.
It was very foggy in places, we kept thinking it would burn off, but it never did
and we were there for over four hours.
This is looking out at the Pacific Ocean, oh well maybe next time!
We found a cool tree along the hike.
There were Banana slugs along the trail.
The girls looking at a tidepool.
Then they tried to round up some lunch.
Angela insisted on carrying this walking stick the whole day.
We only had one foot go into a tide pool.
There was tons of driftwood.
The girls did their best Survivor challenge and built a house.
Some of the signs indicating escape routes in case you get caught when the tide
comes in.
This was a great place to spend the day, although the tide wasn't as low as they
recommend for viewing, it was well worth the drive. It is only 100 km from Victoria,
but the road is very winding and hilly, with many sharp bends and turns.
Regular updates...
We had a great time on Vancouver Island. Today we headed back to North Vancouver
for the night and tomorrow we will head to Rossland,
BC to visit my sister. I have moved the past posts to archive pages linked on
the side menu.
Travel Day
Today was a travel day. We drove from North Vancouver to Rossland. The drive took
us along the Trans Canada and then along the Crowsnest Highway. We only made a couple
of stops, the first was at the Hope Slide.
The landslide occurred on January 9, 1965, triggered by a minor earthquake. It covered
the valley bottom with 70m of debris.
The kids have started to take some of the pictures.
We had lunch in Osoyoos before getting stuck in construction traffic just before
Rossland.
We actually turned the car off while we waited for the go ahead.
We will be in the Rossland area for the next week. I will update when possible.
Picking and Panning
Today we went huckleberry (Vaccinium) picking in the morning up at Nancy
Greene Summit. We were at 1800 metres filling our buckets with the berries.
The view was amazing and the girls had a great time tramping through the bushes.
A huckleberry looks like a blueberry. The huckleberry bush looks like this, in the
photo they look blue, but they are actually a purple colour.
This is what your hands look like after picking.
Gillian went huckleberry picking 5 years ago when she was here.
This was the first time for Angela.
Coming back down the mountain. Claudia, Jesse and Wendel.
The girls have been having a great time with their cousin Jesse. Here are Claudia
and Jesse fighting fires.
In the afternoon we went to the Rossland
Museum and Gold Mine for a tour. There was mining from 1890 to 1929.
Inside the mine. the temperature inside is about 7 degrees Celsius.
At the end of the tour.
Gillian pushing some of the ore around.
Angela taking a turn.
Claudia giving it a shot.
Following the tour we panned for gold. We were able to find some "fool's gold".
Some old bottles from the era of the active mining.
Full day of touring
On Wednesday we went for a driving tour. Today was our second day on the trip that
we had rain. It rained off and on throughout the day. We started in Rossland and
headed for New Denver, BC. We stopped at Lemon Creek along the way.
We stopped for a view of Slocan Lake and some rock climbing.
This picture is looking down.
The girls were hanging from the rocks.
Angela hanging on for dear life!
and Claudia
Jesse reaching the top with Claudia.
The next stop was the Nikkei
Internment Memorial Centre
Some of the original buildings from 1942.
After all the driving we stopped at the Ainsworth
Hot Springs
It started raining while we in the hot spring pool. The temperature of the pool
was only 37.4 deg C and the water in the cave was 41.2 deg C. The cave is horseshoe
shaped and in the middle it is like a hotub/sauna combined.
We had dinner in Nelson and then stopped in Castlegar to see Uncle David at work
before heading home.
Heading to the cabin...
Today we are going out to Christina Lake for a few days at the cabin. Updates will
be unavailable until we return on Sunday.
Relaxing before the drive home...
We spent a few days out at Shanna and David's cabin on Christina Lake. The weather
was excellent and we all had a great time.
The cabin is only accessible by boat, so it sure seems remote.
Our days were spent swimming, tubing and relaxing. The girls had a fun time with
cousin Jesse and playing with his toys. He has a battery powered seadoo that they
each took turns on.
Claudia posing with her friend.
They went tubing everyday. Claudia and Jesse went out together.
Angela and Gillian went together a couple of times.
Then they each went on their own.
You can see the excitement in Angela's face.
The girls were jumping off the wharf (what westerners call a dock).
Angela jumping off.
A couple of mornings we went down to the beach until the sun hit the cabin.
There were turtles basking in the sun.
And a couple of bald eagles living there.
We did a walk through the forest and the girls climbed inside a huge tree.
I had to walk into the creek to take this picture, the water was freezing.
Angela grew some antlers while we were at the lake.
Gillian sprouted some antlers.
Claudia joining her herd of sisters
The girls loved playing with Wendel.
Jesse catching up on his sleep
This is how our afternoons would end each day as the sun would set behind the mountain.
Catching the last rays of sun before it disappeared.
