Day 6: Mayo Beach

Today we headed to Mayo Beach. It is on the Cape Cod Bay side. The parking at this beach is free. Other than the National Park beaches, there are Town of Wellfleet managed beaches. Some of them have limited free parking, other have “sticker” parking, meaning you have to be a resident or pay $50 for a 3 day sticker. We opted to go early and get the free parking. Of course we were early and the only people on the beach were shellfish farmers.

20140801_D7K_3828

It was another beautiful morning, and going early was better as the afternoon started to cloud over.

20140801_D7K_3830

The tide was still going out.

20140801_D7K_3832

We headed up to Main Street and had breakfast at The Lighthouse Restaurant.

20140801_D7K_3834

Once we got back down to the beach, there were more shellfish farmers.

20140801_D7K_3839

They have areas marked off by buoys that are off-limits to digging.

20140801_D7K_3841

Looking back up to the beach.

20140801_D7K_3842

This guy came over to Claudia to tell her not to dig beyond the buoys. I asked if we could come and watch him.

20140801_D7K_3843

He explained the oyster harvesting process with the cages.

20140801_D7K_3844

He said a lot of these oysters were close to being ready for market.

20140801_D7K_3845

He found a cage and brought it back to his table and opened it up for us.

20140801_D7K_3846

He sizes the oysters, the ones that are big enough and have a deep shell are kept, the others go back in the cage or bag for more growing.

20140801_D7K_3847

This guy had been doing this since he was 10 years old and was born in Wellfleet, just up the street from the beach.

20140801_D7K_3849

Here are the oysters cages that are cable-tied to the racks.

20140801_D7K_3851

Next to those he had littleneck clam beds.

20140801_D7K_3853

The girls found this crab.

20140801_D7K_3854

A dead horseshoe crab shell.

20140801_D7K_3857

It was pretty interesting talking to this guy. He is out there almost everyday. He asked if I had ever been to Newfoundland, he had been for a vacation a few years ago and was looking forward to going back some time.

20140801_D7K_3859

Claudia finding a place to dig.

20140801_D7K_3861

A large Horseshoe crab shell.

20140801_D7K_3867

With the tide coming in, the girls let their crabs and hermit crabs go free.

20140801_D7K_3875

We walked around some of the shops along Main Street.

20140801_D7K_3877

Back at the motel it was time for a swim in the outdoor salt water pool.

20140801_D7K_3879

There is also an indoor pool, but not nearly as nice as the outdoor one.

20140801_D7K_3883

20140801_D7K_3885

For dinner tonight we went to Moby Dick’s Restaurant.

20140801_D7K_3890

You line up and then order from the menu. They seat you and then bring you your food when it is ready. I had the Lobster Clambake (1.5 lb lobster with 1 lb of steamers) and a mug of Clam Chowdah, Susan had the grilled Atlantic salmon, and the girls shared a fish & chips and shrimp & chips dinner. It was very good. You can also bring your own booze, they’ll put it in a can on ice while you wait.

20140801_D7K_3892

We took the scenic drive back to the motel. We stopped at Calhoun Hollow Beach for a walk along the beach.

20140801_D7K_3898

20140801_D7K_3912

20140801_D7K_3916

20140801_D7K_3919

There were seven fires that I counted. People can get a permit and they just dig a hole and build a fire. Pretty cool.

20140801_D7K_3938

Day 5: Marconi Beach

Today was a beach day. This is what the girls wanted to do for vacation, beaches, didn’t matter where, just beaches. We headed to Marconi Beach which is part of the Cape Cod National Seashore.

20140731_D7K_3743

As you can see it was a little windy. A neighbour’s umbrella getting away.

20140731_D7K_3744

Marconi Beach is on the Atlantic Ocean side of the Cape.

20140731_D7K_3748

The water was cold, as you can tell by the surfer’s wetsuit. Of course Claudia was right in there.

20140731_D7K_3749

The girls sand creation.

20140731_D7K_3751

Despite the cold water there were lots of people in the water.

20140731_D7K_3752

Including a couple of Gray Seals swimming about.

20140731_D7K_3756

The beach has huge sand cliffs on the one side.

20140731_D7K_3759

There is a protected beach area, i.e. lifeguards, and on either side is where the surfers and those with dogs hang out.

20140731_D7K_3761

Claudia in the middle of her sand castle.

20140731_D7K_3764

This was the view for most of the day.

20140731_D7K_3766

Claudia relaxing as the tide was coming in. That is a person on a surfboard out there, not a shark.

20140731_D7K_3771

Another Gray Seal in the water. There are signs before heading to the beach that tell you not to swim in the water near seals. Where there are seals, there may be seal predators, i.e. sharks!

20140731_D7K_3776

As you can see Claudia is having a great time.

20140731_D7K_3777

Not sure why Angela has the pout going on, but it may have been the tide coming in and wrecking her sand.

20140731_D7K_3780

20140731_D7K_3781

Another shot of the Gray Seal.

20140731_D7K_3786

The beach was pretty busy, they charge you $15/vehicle to use the beach. This was looking north.

20140731_D7K_3787

This was looking south.

20140731_D7K_3790

After the beach we went to the Marconi Tower site. It no longer stands, as most of the remnants have been removed due to parts falling down to the ocean due to the erosion. Marconi was planning to do his first trans-atlantic transmission test from this site, but due to a storm knocking down some of the towers he ended up in St John’s, NL and received the first trans-atlantic test signal.

20140731_D7K_3795

Some of the closed off areas due to erosion.

20140731_D7K_3797

We had dinner at PJ’s on Route 6, I had fried clams, Angela had fried shrimp, Susan had the bbq ribs and Claudia had caesar salad. Afterwards we went into Wellfleet to the Mayo Beach. This would be our destination for tomorrow. This beach had some tide pools.

20140731_D7K_3800

A random crab claw.

20140731_D7K_3812

20140731_D7K_3813

We made one final stop back at Marconi Beach.

20140731_D7K_3820

The tide was going out.

20140731_D7K_3822

The end to another great day on Cape Cod.

20140731_D7K_3825

Day 4: Cape Cod

Today we were heading to Cape Cod for the beaches. It was a travel day with only one planned stop along the way. We stopped at a K-Mart along the way for some beach toys. Both Angela and I had an Elvis sighting while we were in the store. It wasn’t until dinner that I asked if anyone else saw Elvis and Angela described the same guy.

Claudia wanted to stop at Walhburgers in Hingham, MA. This is the restaurant in the reality tv show on A&E by the same name. It is owned by Donnie, Mark and Paul Walhberg. They have either table or counter service, we opted for the faster counter service.

20140730_D7K_3704

On the ceilings are these with all of the movie titles they have been in.

20140730_D7K_3706

The outside of the burger joint, not very big inside, but the turnover is quick on the counter service seating side.

20140730_D7K_3709

We’ll be spending a few days in Wellfleet, MA while we are on the Cape. After dinner we headed to Duck Harbor Beach.

20140730_D7K_3712

Waiting for the sunset.

20140730_D7K_3715

Angela.

20140730_D7K_3718

Susan looking for sea glass. There wasn’t much around, no colours.

20140730_D7K_3719

The beach area, it was low tide, it was very rocky.

20140730_D7K_3720

Angela and Claudia doing what they do best on a beach.

20140730_D7K_3722

A Cape Cod sunset.

20140730_D7K_3726

20140730_D7K_3728

Almost down.

20140730_D7K_3730

20140730_D7K_3733

…gone.

20140730_D7K_3741

It was a great start to our Cape Cod stay. Tomorrow we off to the Cape Cod National Seashore. Our drive today from Waltham (A) to Hingham (A) to Wellfleet (C).

Day 3: Fenway Park

We took the Green Line from Boylston Station to Fenway Station. Signs to get you from the subway station to the ballpark.

20140729_D7K_3616

The corner of Yawkey Way and Brookline Ave.

20140729_D7K_3617

Looking down Yawkey Way.

20140729_D7K_3618

Our entrance gate was on the other side of the stadium.

20140729_D7K_3619

Found our gate, but a long line-up waiting for the gates to open at 5:30PM.

20140729_D7K_3621

Despite the line-up it moved surprisingly fast.

20140729_D7K_3622

The centre field scoreboard.

20140729_D7K_3624

Jose Bautista.

20140729_D7K_3629

Angela and Claudia on the railing waiting for a batting practice home run ball to come their way. There were a couple that were in the vicinity.

20140729_D7K_3632

We walked around the stadium to the home plate side. Our seats were just above the NESN sign in the outfield in the second row.

20140729_D7K_3636

20140729_D7K_3637

Some of the views from other sections in the ballpark.

20140729_D7K_3643

20140729_D7K_3644

Not sure how much they charge for the folding chair after the last row of seats.

20140729_D7K_3645

The concourse area under the seats. Beer is almost the same price as Skydome, but in US dollars, so probably more expensive.

20140729_D7K_3646

Me and my $9 draft beer at Fenway.

20140729_D7K_3654

The girls and Susan (with my $9 draft beer).

20140729_D7K_3655

The bullpen areas.

20140729_D7K_3659

We couldn’t see the big screen for replays easily, we would have to keep turning around. Claudia complained she was lost without it, imagine what they did at baseball games before the digital age.

20140729_D7K_3660

The Jays started the night holding the second wild card place, and still had it at the end of the night, although they didn’t pick up any ground on Baltimore who won in 12 innings.

20140729_D7K_3664

Late afternoon.

20140729_D7K_3667

Evening.

20140729_D7K_3687

There were a lot of Blue Jays fans in the stadium. The people in front of us were from Ottawa.

20140729_D7K_3689

20140729_D7K_3690

Game over. Jays win! You can see Bautista, Gose and Cabrera doing their celebratory jump in the outfield.

20140729_D7K_3702

The final stats for the game. It was a great experience.

20140729_D7K_3703

Day 3: New England Aquarium

We woke up to sunny skies and the sounds of construction. There is a building demolition going on across the street and they start early, or at least it seems early when you are on vacation. We headed to the T (Boston Transit) to head back downtown.

20140729_D7K_3463

A giant tea pot over the entrance to a Starbucks.

20140729_D7K_3465

20140729_D7K_3466

To get to the New England Aquarium, we had to retrace our steps from yesterday, passing by the Quincy Market.

20140729_D7K_3470

Angela and Claudia with a penguin buddy outside the aquarium.

20140729_D7K_3471

Penguins are their big attraction.

20140729_D7K_3476

There are three types of penguins at the aquarium. Here are the African Penguins (Spheniscus demersus).

20140729_D7K_3479

This guy was the loudest.

20140729_D7K_3491

This is a Little Blue penguin (Eudyptula minor).

20140729_D7K_3498

20140729_D7K_3503

There are also California Sea Lions (Zalophus californianus).

20140729_D7K_3514

This was the biggest one, having a shake after getting out of the water.

20140729_D7K_3518

This is the Southern Rockhopper penguin (Eudyptes chrysocome).

In the middle of the building there is a giant ocean tank that is four storeys high. It 26 feet deep, 40 feet wide and holds 200,000 gallons. There were a couple of giant sea turtles swimming around.

20140729_D7K_3537

They had a couple of divers in the tank feeding the fish.

This sea turtle was having a rest.

20140729_D7K_3562

A puffer fish.

20140729_D7K_3564

It was a good aquarium and in the morning it wasn’t that busy. Here are the girls outside, notice what Claudia is carrying. When I agreed, I was thinking of G-ma and G-pa saying buy what they want no matter what your parents think. They were willing to carry it for the rest of the day. Not sure if they put the 50% off sign on it just to make you think you got a deal.

20140729_D7K_3570

The New England Aquarium.

20140729_D7K_3572

After lunch at the Beantown Pub, we walked over to the Kings Chapel. Here are the girls sitting in a pew.

20140729_D7K_3575

The pulpit.

20140729_D7K_3576

There is also a burying ground next to the church. This one dates back to 1630.

20140729_D7K_3582

20140729_D7K_3584

Next it was over to Boston Common. We walked along Beacon St. past the State House.

20140729_D7K_3591

A statue of John F Kennedy. There was a locked gate between us.

20140729_D7K_3593

We went by the original outside of the Cheers bar.

20140729_D7K_3595

There were too many people at the sidewalk level taking photos, so I had Angela take one from below.

20140729_D7K_3599

A monument in the middle of Boston Common. Look at the guy laying a the foot of it.

20140729_D7K_3613

A closer view, not sure what was up with that, but eventually he got up and walked away.

20140729_D7K_3614

Day 2: Boston Walk About

This morning we woke up to rain and thunderstorms and a forecast of much the same for the rest of the day. The plan was to head downtown and hit the New England Aquarium. By the time we headed out the door the rain had stopped and as we drove to Riverside Station to take the subway, the sun came out. Claudia and Angela on the Greenline subway train.

20140728_D7K_3387

Our first stop of the day was the Granary Burial Ground. This is in the heart of Boston and is the final resting place of Paul Revere, Benjamin Franklin’s parents, Samuel Adams and John Hancock to name a few. The cemetery dates back to 1660.

20140728_D7K_3389

Paul Revere’s tomb.

20140728_D7K_3390

A lot of the headstones had these skull and crossed bones.

20140728_D7K_3395

The headstone for Samuel Adams, one of the founding fathers of the United States. Also the namesake of some pretty good beer.

20140728_D7K_3412

20140728_D7K_3415

We had lunch at the Quincy Market Colonnade. I had New England Clam Chowda and Angela had lobster Mac & Cheese from Boston Chowda Co.

20140728_D7K_3421

The area between Quincy Market and the South Market.

20140728_D7K_3420

We started to make our way over to the aquarium, but we were distracted by the sunny weather and no rain.

20140728_D7K_3425

The line-up at the Aquarium was crazy long and we decided we would come back tomorrow earlier in the day.

20140728_D7K_3426

The girls with Kevin White, a four term mayor of Boston.

20140728_D7K_3432

Faneuil Hall Marketplace.

20140728_D7K_3433

We headed over to the fishing pier for dinner at the No Name Restaurant. We walked over from downtown, it was a good hike along the water to the Seaport District.

The Spirit of Boston.

20140728_D7K_3443

Our dinner destination, the Boston Fish Pier. It is 100 years old this year.

20140728_D7K_3444

We all had the lobster dinner at the No Name Restaurant.

20140728_D7K_3447

It started with bread, cole slaw, fried shrimp and scallops, french fries, and then lobster with corn on the cob.

20140728_D7K_3448

It was a good meal and we needed to do the walk back to the subway to work it off.

The back of the fish pier.

20140728_D7K_3451

20140728_D7K_3452

We made our way back to Riverside Station which was only about a 10 minute drive from our hotel in Waltham. MA.

Day 1: Boston & Cape Cod 2014

Boston-cc.logoWe started our summer vacation today. We are heading to Boston and Cape Cod for about a week.  From there it is up to Danvers, MA north of Boston and then back home with a stop in Syracuse, NY. One of the trip highlights is going to Fenway Park on Tuesday night to watch the Red Sox play the Blue Jays.

It is just the four of us going this year, as Gillian has stayed home due to work. She’ll have Chloe to keep her company. Here they are this morning before we left.

20140727_D7K_3386

Claudia and Angela ready to go.

20140727_D7K_3385

Our route today. Home (A) to Waltham, MA (B).

Buffalo Narrows

I had one last trip before some holidays this summer. I was back out to Saskatoon and then onwards to Meadow Lake, Pinehouse and Buffalo Narrows. It was a successful trip.

There was lots of black bears, deer and Sandhill cranes along the roads. In Buffalo Narrows there is a colony of White Pelicans. On both days we saw a doe with two baby deer in tow. This is a photo of one of them.

Honda Indy Free Day

Angela, Dylan (Angela’s boyfriend) and I went down to the free day at the Honda Indy. the weather forecast was hot and sunny. Gillian was working and Claudia was at Auntie Carolyn’s. This year they had scheduled a race on Saturday and Sunday. Due to the wet weather they ended up postponing Saturday’s race until Sunday morning and then running the second race in the afternoon. Here is the winner of the second race, Mike Conway.

The winner of the first race was Sebastien Bourdais.

He didn’t fare as well in either race.

One of my favourite drivers, Helio Castroneves of Brazil. He finished second in the first race and 12th in the second. He is the current points leader in the Indy standings.

After the practice session we had lunch and then headed over to Turn 3 to watch some of the other series practice sessions.

We didn’t make it down last year and one major change now is they charge $35 to access the Indy Car Paddock area, it use to be free as well. Even without access anymore, the free day is still a good chance to see the cars and drivers up close. We didn’t stick around for the second practice session for the Indy cars. We beat the rush hour and headed back to the car at Clarkson station. It is good the trains run every 30 minutes now.
