Claudia’s Softball Tournament

Claudia made the co-ed softball team at school. Their one day tournament was on Friday. She was the team catcher, not necessarily by choice, but she is a trooper. I was able to watch their final two games. Here she is at bat, she ended up fouling off her third pitch, thus making the out.

Here she is throwing the ball back to the pitcher.

Posing before the last game.

It was a hot day and she had to wear the helmet and pads all day. They ended up going 1-2-1 and missed out on the semi-finals. In the last game her hit to first base allowed the runner to score from first base (only a couple of overthrow errors) and tie the game. It was a nice piece of hitting to the opposite side to avoid the double play.

Happy Birthday Claudia!

Our baby is a teenager, Claudia turned 13 today. Where have the years gone, her Pirate Party on her 2nd birthday doesn’t seem that long ago.

Congratulations Claudia.

The End of an Era

We have finally received permission from all of the girls to dismantle the ship/tower in the backyard. Angela was the last to sign on, it will be going to a good home. I will take it apart and we will transport to the backyard of our friends Mario and Judi for Emma, Abbey and Katie to enjoy for a few more years. I will take pictures as it starts to come down. It has been around in some form for at least 13 years, but it is probably a couple of years older than that, Angela might have been only a baby when it was first built.

Treetop Trekking

Angela and the other third year Pathfinders were able to go to Treetop Trekking at Horseshoe Valley Resort. Here are the girls getting some instructions from one of the guides.

Angela only about three feet off the ground.

It was off to the Purple course to start.

Angela on one of the early zip lines.

They had to swing over to the next platform. Here is Angela getting over.

There were paths under all of the courses, so we walked around watching them for awhile.

Then we headed back to the car for some lunch and a nap.

Here is Angela.

Chloe was a tired dog at the end of the day.

Angela waiting to move on.

The Trilliums (Trillium grandiflorum) were in bloom. The seeds of a trillium are dispersed by ants.

Angela way up.

The girls were doing the Big Zip as the last thing, so Claudia was able to join them. Here she is getting suited up.

The Big Zip is 983ft long and you can get up to speeds of 40 km/h. There goes Angela.

When Susan paid for Claudia, the girl gave her the resort discount and then she called her back and wrote 2X on her wrist band so she could go twice.

A video of Claudia zip-lining down the Big Zip.

Angela’s Advancement

Angela had her Advancement Ceremony from Pathfinders tonight. Not quite as elaborate as Gillian’s was a few years ago. They joined with some of the other area guiding groups. The leaders have decided to continue on until this years first year girls (including Claudia) finish up. They will not be taking on any additional girls in the fall.

Angela with her leaders. She is moving on to Rangers next year. Angela has completed her Canada Cord and she’ll receive it at a ceremony in September. Well done Angela!

Congratulations Gillian!

Gillian has accepted her offer to McMaster’s Life Sciences program starting in September. Exciting times are ahead for her. Her next task is to submit her residence application.

Did you feel it?

I felt the earthquake on Friday morning, I was sitting at my desk on the 4th floor of our building and could feel the building move. It was a 5.2 magnitude.

ROPSSAA Badminton Playoffs

Congratulations to Angela and her junior girls badminton team, they are off to ROPSSAA after finishing 5-1 in their regular season.

Vinyl Cafe

On Thursday Susan and I headed out to the Burlington Performing Arts Centre to see the Vinyl Cafe with Stuart Maclean. As we waited to go into the auditorium we noticed it seemed to be a pretty white crowd. Not sure if it is an indication of the city where the show was or the demographics of his audience, but even when we were inside and looking around, we could only spot one black guy, one brown guy and me the lone asian. After spending a week in Chicago and living in Mississauga, it was very weird.

The show was great, it turned out they were recording it for radio and it will broadcast the beginning of June. The musical guest was Diana Panton, a jazz vocalist from Hamilton. It was a 2 hour show with two Dave and Morley stories. I pulled this photo from the internet, but I think he was wearing the same shirt. He is very animated when he is telling his stories.

May @ MAC 2013

After getting home late Friday from Chicago we headed out early for Hamilton and McMaster University. Saturday was their annual May @ MAC open house. Gillian wanted to visit again to see the Life Sciences and tour the residences again. We dropped Grandma and the girls off and then headed to campus with Gillian and her friend Veronica. Gillian wasn’t keen on Matthews Hall where I lived for two years. After 38 years they are renovating the outside of the building, the inside still looked the same.

Gillian has until June 3rd to make her final decision. Her friend Veronica was accepted to McMaster for Life Sciences and Nursing. If they both go to McMaster it would continue their 14 years of schooling together as they were both in the same junior kindergarten class.
