Taking Angela and Claudia to Boston and Cape Cod to watch the Blue Jays beat the Red Sox at Fenway Park, swim in the cold Atlantic Ocean, having a burger at Walhburger’s and eating lobster on the Boston Fish Pier: Priceless

Fenway Video

A couple of videos from the baseball game at Fenway Park. The first is during the 7th inning stretch and “Take Me Out To The Ballgame”. The announced attendance was 38, 275 for a Tuesday night game. Watch for the flying batting helmet/popcorn bowl that comes flying towards me at the end, courtesy of a little girl from Ottawa sitting in front of us.

During the middle of the 8th inning at every home game since 2002, they play Neil Diamond’s “Sweet Caroline”. The girls were right into, not sure if the little boy in front of them was plugging his ears because of their singing. Watch around the 40 second mark as Angela breaks into song!

Day 10: Back Home

We only had a short drive from Syracuse, NY to home. After a quick stop at Duty Free, we headed for the border. It was pretty quick through customs, just a few questions and then we were on our way. They had re-opened the Burlington Skyway the night before, so we didn’t have to deal with any detours coming back. They did a pretty good patch job, even looking for the signs of damage it was difficult to spot, especially after seeing the pictures in the news. We pulled into the driveway shortly after 2:00 PM. Gillian was at work, but the the dog was happy to see us.

Day 9: Syracuse Chiefs

We started making our way back home today. We had one final stop in Syracuse, NY to watch the Syracuse Chiefs play the Scranton Wilkes-Barre RailRiders for some Triple A baseball.

You would barely notice that you were entering New York State.

The Syracuse Chiefs are the Triple A affiliate of the Washington Nationals. They were down early to the Scranton Wilkes-Barre RailRiders, here is the first run coming home to score. The RailRiders are the NY Yankees farm team.

The view from the concourse. The Chiefs rallied back a couple of times to take the lead for good in the bottom of the 7th.

20140804_D7K_4074

Angela enjoying her cotton candy, when we were at Fenway she wanted some, but the guy never came around again and then the game was over.

20140804_D7K_4076

The field has natural turf, from 1997-2007 the field was Astroturf. The Syracuse Chiefs were the Triple A affiliate of the Toronto Blue Jays from 1978 to 2008.

20140804_D7K_4077

A view from our seats, we were in row 1 seats 1-4. We had to look around the obstruction to see certain angles of the field but still good seats.

20140804_D7K_4078

It also made it easy to get a game ball from Chiefs catcher Jhonatan Solano. As the girls will tell you I wrestled it away from an old guy sitting next to us. He was tossing it to me in my new Syracuse Chiefs ball cap.

20140804_D7K_4079

It was a tight game, if you consider 4 errors by the home team, it shouldn’t have been.

20140804_D7K_4082

They went through a string of relievers.

20140804_D7K_4092

20140804_D7K_4093

Manny Burriss at the plate in the 8th inning.

20140804_D7K_4101

It was a great game, we like going to the minor league parks to watch games. The ticket prices are cheap, the food is good and the beer is cheaper. The final score was 7-6 for the Chiefs.

Day 8: Good Harbor Beach

Today was our last beach day. We headed in to Gloucester, MA on Cape Ann. We parked at the Fort Stage Park and took the trolley to the beach. To park at the beach it costs $25/vehicle, if you took the trolley it was free parking and cost $1/person to ride.

20140803_D7K_3941

It was about a 20 minute scenic trolley ride that took us through different parts of town.

20140803_D7K_3942

We were at the beach by 10:30 in the morning, and low tide was at 11:00 AM.

20140803_D7K_3946

There were some off and on sprinkles of rain.

20140803_D7K_3985

The tide was starting to come in by mid-afternoon.

20140803_D7K_3987

One last picture before they filled the hole in. We took the trolley back to town. The ride took us along the coast and through Rocky Neck.

Gloucester is the oldest seaport in America, it dates back to 1623. It is the setting for the non fiction book, The Perfect Storm by Sebastian Junger and the movie version was filmed there on location, with Goerge Clooney and Mark Wahlberg.

20140803_D7K_4012

We had dinner at Captain Carlos, it was our last fill of seafood for this trip. Susan and Claudia had the Baked Haddock, Angela had the Baked Scallops, and I had the Shrimp and Scallop Alfredo with a mug of chowdah.

20140803_D7K_4013

We took a short walk after dinner to one of the piers. This is an old marine railway they were restoring.

Day 7: Traffic Jam

Today was a travel day. We left the Cape in the morning, not realizing everyone else on the Cape was also leaving. It took almost two hours to get across the Cape and over the bridge. We took the Bourne Bridge across to highway 25. There were no pictures today, so I pulled a couple off of the internet. Here is the what our traffic jam looked like today. Even the weather was the same. It rained for most of the drive.

bridge-backup

We made one stop today at the Wrentham Village Premium Outlet. There was another traffic jam getting into the outlet mall, but the first aisle I went up I found a parking spot. Traffic coming out wasn’t that bad. It was about an hour drive to our hotel in Danvers, MA.

Wrentham-outlet

Our route today, Wellfleet (A) to Wrentham (B) to Danvers (D). Tomorrow we are going to some beaches in Gloucester, about a 20 minute drive east.

Day 6: Mayo Beach

Today we headed to Mayo Beach. It is on the Cape Cod Bay side. The parking at this beach is free. Other than the National Park beaches, there are Town of Wellfleet managed beaches. Some of them have limited free parking, other have “sticker” parking, meaning you have to be a resident or pay $50 for a 3 day sticker. We opted to go early and get the free parking. Of course we were early and the only people on the beach were shellfish farmers.

20140801_D7K_3828

It was another beautiful morning, and going early was better as the afternoon started to cloud over.

20140801_D7K_3830

The tide was still going out.

20140801_D7K_3832

We headed up to Main Street and had breakfast at The Lighthouse Restaurant.

20140801_D7K_3834

Once we got back down to the beach, there were more shellfish farmers.

20140801_D7K_3839

They have areas marked off by buoys that are off-limits to digging.

20140801_D7K_3841

Looking back up to the beach.

20140801_D7K_3842

This guy came over to Claudia to tell her not to dig beyond the buoys. I asked if we could come and watch him.

20140801_D7K_3843

He explained the oyster harvesting process with the cages.

20140801_D7K_3844

He said a lot of these oysters were close to being ready for market.

20140801_D7K_3845

He found a cage and brought it back to his table and opened it up for us.

20140801_D7K_3846

He sizes the oysters, the ones that are big enough and have a deep shell are kept, the others go back in the cage or bag for more growing.

20140801_D7K_3847

This guy had been doing this since he was 10 years old and was born in Wellfleet, just up the street from the beach.

20140801_D7K_3849

Here are the oysters cages that are cable-tied to the racks.

20140801_D7K_3851

Next to those he had littleneck clam beds.

20140801_D7K_3853

The girls found this crab.

20140801_D7K_3854

A dead horseshoe crab shell.

20140801_D7K_3857

It was pretty interesting talking to this guy. He is out there almost everyday. He asked if I had ever been to Newfoundland, he had been for a vacation a few years ago and was looking forward to going back some time.

20140801_D7K_3859

Claudia finding a place to dig.

20140801_D7K_3861

A large Horseshoe crab shell.

20140801_D7K_3867

With the tide coming in, the girls let their crabs and hermit crabs go free.

20140801_D7K_3875

We walked around some of the shops along Main Street.

20140801_D7K_3877

Back at the motel it was time for a swim in the outdoor salt water pool.

20140801_D7K_3879

There is also an indoor pool, but not nearly as nice as the outdoor one.

20140801_D7K_3883

20140801_D7K_3885

For dinner tonight we went to Moby Dick’s Restaurant.

20140801_D7K_3890

You line up and then order from the menu. They seat you and then bring you your food when it is ready. I had the Lobster Clambake (1.5 lb lobster with 1 lb of steamers) and a mug of Clam Chowdah, Susan had the grilled Atlantic salmon, and the girls shared a fish & chips and shrimp & chips dinner. It was very good. You can also bring your own booze, they’ll put it in a can on ice while you wait.

20140801_D7K_3892

We took the scenic drive back to the motel. We stopped at Calhoun Hollow Beach for a walk along the beach.

20140801_D7K_3898

20140801_D7K_3912

20140801_D7K_3916

20140801_D7K_3919

There were seven fires that I counted. People can get a permit and they just dig a hole and build a fire. Pretty cool.

20140801_D7K_3938

Day 5: Marconi Beach

Today was a beach day. This is what the girls wanted to do for vacation, beaches, didn’t matter where, just beaches. We headed to Marconi Beach which is part of the Cape Cod National Seashore.

20140731_D7K_3743

As you can see it was a little windy. A neighbour’s umbrella getting away.

20140731_D7K_3744

Marconi Beach is on the Atlantic Ocean side of the Cape.

20140731_D7K_3748

The water was cold, as you can tell by the surfer’s wetsuit. Of course Claudia was right in there.

20140731_D7K_3749

The girls sand creation.

20140731_D7K_3751

Despite the cold water there were lots of people in the water.

20140731_D7K_3752

Including a couple of Gray Seals swimming about.

20140731_D7K_3756

The beach has huge sand cliffs on the one side.

20140731_D7K_3759

There is a protected beach area, i.e. lifeguards, and on either side is where the surfers and those with dogs hang out.

20140731_D7K_3761

Claudia in the middle of her sand castle.

20140731_D7K_3764

This was the view for most of the day.

20140731_D7K_3766

Claudia relaxing as the tide was coming in. That is a person on a surfboard out there, not a shark.

20140731_D7K_3771

Another Gray Seal in the water. There are signs before heading to the beach that tell you not to swim in the water near seals. Where there are seals, there may be seal predators, i.e. sharks!

20140731_D7K_3776

As you can see Claudia is having a great time.

20140731_D7K_3777

Not sure why Angela has the pout going on, but it may have been the tide coming in and wrecking her sand.

20140731_D7K_3780

20140731_D7K_3781

Another shot of the Gray Seal.

20140731_D7K_3786

The beach was pretty busy, they charge you $15/vehicle to use the beach. This was looking north.

20140731_D7K_3787

This was looking south.

20140731_D7K_3790

After the beach we went to the Marconi Tower site. It no longer stands, as most of the remnants have been removed due to parts falling down to the ocean due to the erosion. Marconi was planning to do his first trans-atlantic transmission test from this site, but due to a storm knocking down some of the towers he ended up in St John’s, NL and received the first trans-atlantic test signal.

20140731_D7K_3795

Some of the closed off areas due to erosion.

20140731_D7K_3797

We had dinner at PJ’s on Route 6, I had fried clams, Angela had fried shrimp, Susan had the bbq ribs and Claudia had caesar salad. Afterwards we went into Wellfleet to the Mayo Beach. This would be our destination for tomorrow. This beach had some tide pools.

20140731_D7K_3800

A random crab claw.

20140731_D7K_3812

20140731_D7K_3813

We made one final stop back at Marconi Beach.

20140731_D7K_3820

The tide was going out.

20140731_D7K_3822

The end to another great day on Cape Cod.

20140731_D7K_3825

Day 4: Cape Cod

Today we were heading to Cape Cod for the beaches. It was a travel day with only one planned stop along the way. We stopped at a K-Mart along the way for some beach toys. Both Angela and I had an Elvis sighting while we were in the store. It wasn’t until dinner that I asked if anyone else saw Elvis and Angela described the same guy.

Claudia wanted to stop at Walhburgers in Hingham, MA. This is the restaurant in the reality tv show on A&E by the same name. It is owned by Donnie, Mark and Paul Walhberg. They have either table or counter service, we opted for the faster counter service.

20140730_D7K_3704

On the ceilings are these with all of the movie titles they have been in.

20140730_D7K_3706

The outside of the burger joint, not very big inside, but the turnover is quick on the counter service seating side.

20140730_D7K_3709

We’ll be spending a few days in Wellfleet, MA while we are on the Cape. After dinner we headed to Duck Harbor Beach.

20140730_D7K_3712

Waiting for the sunset.

20140730_D7K_3715

Angela.

20140730_D7K_3718

Susan looking for sea glass. There wasn’t much around, no colours.

20140730_D7K_3719

The beach area, it was low tide, it was very rocky.

20140730_D7K_3728

Almost down.

20140730_D7K_3730

20140730_D7K_3733

…gone.

20140730_D7K_3741

It was a great start to our Cape Cod stay. Tomorrow we off to the Cape Cod National Seashore. Our drive today from Waltham (A) to Hingham (A) to Wellfleet (C).

Day 3: Fenway Park

We took the Green Line from Boylston Station to Fenway Station. Signs to get you from the subway station to the ballpark.

20140729_D7K_3616

The corner of Yawkey Way and Brookline Ave.

20140729_D7K_3617

Looking down Yawkey Way.

20140729_D7K_3618

Our entrance gate was on the other side of the stadium.

20140729_D7K_3619

Found our gate, but a long line-up waiting for the gates to open at 5:30PM.

20140729_D7K_3621

Despite the line-up it moved surprisingly fast.

20140729_D7K_3622

The centre field scoreboard.

20140729_D7K_3624

Jose Bautista.

20140729_D7K_3629

Angela and Claudia on the railing waiting for a batting practice home run ball to come their way. There were a couple that were in the vicinity.

20140729_D7K_3632

We walked around the stadium to the home plate side. Our seats were just above the NESN sign in the outfield in the second row.

Some of the views from other sections in the ballpark.

20140729_D7K_3643

20140729_D7K_3644

Not sure how much they charge for the folding chair after the last row of seats.

20140729_D7K_3645

The concourse area under the seats. Beer is almost the same price as Skydome, but in US dollars, so probably more expensive.

20140729_D7K_3646

Me and my $9 draft beer at Fenway.

20140729_D7K_3654

The girls and Susan (with my $9 draft beer).

20140729_D7K_3655

The bullpen areas.

20140729_D7K_3659

We couldn’t see the big screen for replays easily, we would have to keep turning around. Claudia complained she was lost without it, imagine what they did at baseball games before the digital age.

20140729_D7K_3660

The Jays started the night holding the second wild card place, and still had it at the end of the night, although they didn’t pick up any ground on Baltimore who won in 12 innings.

20140729_D7K_3664

Late afternoon.

20140729_D7K_3667

Evening.

20140729_D7K_3687

There were a lot of Blue Jays fans in the stadium. The people in front of us were from Ottawa.

20140729_D7K_3689

20140729_D7K_3690

Game over. Jays win! You can see Bautista, Gose and Cabrera doing their celebratory jump in the outfield.

20140729_D7K_3702

The final stats for the game. It was a great experience.
