Gillian and Angela were home this weekend before exams start next week. Happy Birthday to Gillian.
Mississauga Steelheads
Susan and I went to the Mississauga Steelheads Junior A game on Friday night at the Hershey Centre. Claudia had gotten us tickets through her work. The Steelheads were playing the Peterborough Petes. It was a good start for Mississauga, leading 2-1 in the second period, but then a bunch of penalties and before you knew it, it was 5-2. They added a late goal to make the final 5-3.
Claudia came down to see us after the game.
The End of the $1 Breakfast
Susan, Claudia and I went to Ikea after church today for the breakfast combo. That is usually the $1 breakfast, coffee and chocolate milk for less than $10 (that’s for 5 of us) and then some purchases from the marketplace or showroom which brings to over $100. Today we discovered it is no more! they have replaced the $1 breakfast with a Traditional breakfast for $2.99. This is what you get for an increase of 200%.
You get a slice of Swedish Texas toast and two slices of tomato. The potatoes, 2 sausage and eggs are about the same size portions. It looks like they switched over about a month ago, what a disappointment. Things don’t last forever, but the $1 breakfast had been around since 2004.
Toronto Marlies Game
On Saturday afternoon, Claudia and I went down to Ricoh Coliseum to watch the Toronto Marlies take on the Manitoba Moose. I received an e-mail from MLSE offering free tickets to one of three games, the only one we could go to was Saturday’s. Waiting for the opening face-off. Our seats were on the red line in Row H, not bad for freebies.
It was a good game, Toronto took an early 2-0 lead only to have it tied up on two power play goals. They made it 3-2 and put it away with an empty net goal for a final 4-2 score. It was good seeing Leafs prospects being able to hold a 4-2 lead with minutes to go in a game.
Hilton Falls Hike
We went out to Hilton Falls Conservation Area on Saturday afternoon, there was a line-up to get into the parking lot, but it went pretty quick.
The falls, I don’t think we have been here when the falls are more than a trickle.
Angela was visiting a friend at Guelph.
Claudia in the river above the falls.
The trees are starting to turn.
My selfie with Claudia.
Although the parking lot was busy, there were parts of the trail that were not busy.
I was taking photos behind my back.
It was a good walk, even with the crowds.
Heading back to the parking lot.
Claudia’s Co-op
Claudia is well into her co-op work placement this term. She is working for Rogers TV Mobile unit, mainly at the Hershey Centre doing Mississauga Steelheads hockey games. She did some orientation training earlier and did two games this past weekend. She helps to setup, broadcast and take down for each game. During the broadcasts she has done the audio and spends the game in the truck. So far she is enjoying it, although she was complaining about being sore from all the lifting of equipment and cables.
Here is a picture of Claudia setting up the audio .
Here she is low key watching the baseball game.
The type of truck she works in some nights.
MAC Homecoming
It was Homecoming Weekend at McMaster, my roommate Stam from our university days and I went down for the football game between McMaster and Guelph. It has been awhile since Stam had been on campus, the last time might have been when Susan and I got married and we did our photos on campus. A lot has changed since then. The rain held off and Stam, Angela, Gillian and I stayed until the end. Mac won 27-15 and are now ranked 8th in the CIS rankings.
Afterwards we headed over to Matthews Hall, our residence for the first two years, it had been 30 years since we lived there, of course it has changed just as much as the campus has. Angela had one of her friends get us into the residence, and Stam and I gave Angela and Gillian a quick recap of some of our shenanigans. The concrete room in the basement that we use to play cave hockey in, is now a study room, with windows to the hallway and carpeting and lots of lighting. This is the bottom of the stairwell in Matthews, they have even repaired the floor since the first time we came with Gillian for a residence tour in grade 12.
During our time Matthews was divided into five houses, we lived in North House, today it is now referred to Matthews North. Of the other four houses the only other one that remains is Centre, the other three no longer exist. Stam only has four more years before his daughter will be heading off to college or university, who knows maybe she’ll end up at her parents alma mater.
Family Skype
This was the first weekend it was only Susan, Claudia and I. Gillian was working and Angela was busy at school, so they did not come home for the weekend. After some technical difficulties with Gillian’s Skype, we managed to do a group call. It only works if you are all using Skype on a computer or laptop. Angela was in her residence room and Gillian was in her bedroom at Lori’s. Here is a photo of the screen.
