Into The City

We headed downtown on Saturday morning, Susan, Angela and Gillian headed to Originals on Queen Street to go Prom dress shopping. Claudia and I went to the McDonalds on the north west corner of Queen/Spadina. They have a second floor with windows looking down onto the intersection. One of the new streetcars, it has four sections to it.

We were most amazed at the drivers getting out and having to switch the track if they were turning onto Queen or heading south on Spadina. Here is a driver switching the track. Only about 70 percent of the TTC streetcar switches are electronic. Eventually there was a dedicated switcher standing at the intersection.

It only took an hour for the girls to find a dress for Angela. From there it was up to Xam Yu for lunch. We had noodles, crispy beef, shrimp balls, mussels in black bean sauce, and cantonese chow mein. As always it was delicious.

The corner of Dundas and Spadina, it was busy, probably because the weather was so nice out. What a change from a week ago when it was in the -20’s, Saturday’s temp were around plus 12.

Congratulations to the Girls!

Congratulations are in order for Gillian on getting a co-op job with Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada this summer. Thanks for Grandma and Papa for driving her to the interview last week. The job is in Vineland.

Angela received another university offer, this one is from the University of Guelph in the Bachelor of Science Human Kinetics program.

Claudia received all A’s on her first semester report card. Another job well done!

Exams Are Done!

Angela and Claudia have both finished their exam schedule. They are off for a few days until second semester starts up on Thursday. Everyday they had to “study”.

Ontario Scotties 2016

The Ontario Scotties Tournament of Hearts was held last weekend at the Brampton Curling Club. The tournament determines who would represent Ontario at the Scotties in Grande Prairie, Alberta next month. For the most part the teams competing are relatively unknowns to the casual curling observer. The big names were Team Homan and Team Middaugh. Gillian wanted to go and watch the weekend games, the other girls were in study mode for exams. I bought two weekend passes for the page playoff games and the semi and final on Sunday.

We missed the Page 1 vs 2 game on Saturday afternoon as Gillian had to work. We started with the Page 3 vs 4game Saturday night. It featured Team Hanna from Ottawa and Team Tippin from Woodstock. They set up temporary seating on one of the sheets for spectators to watch up close.

Curling Semi-Finals

It was back to the Brampton Curling Club on Sunday morning for the semi-final game between Team Hanna and Team Harrison from Mississauga. The ice maker.

We were thinking Claudia should make a couple of these hats.

Team Hanna lead Karen Sagle.

Jacqueline Harrison, the skip for Team Harrison.

20160124-D7K_9871

It was a close game throughout with Team Harrison leading most of the way.

20160124-D7K_9875

In the end it came down to the last shot in the 10th and Harrison missed on their attempt resulting in a steal of two and a 6-5 victory for Team Hanna.

Ontario Scotties Finals

Gillian and I had a couple of hours between games, originally we were going to go somewhere for lunch, but after sitting out on the ice for most of the morning game, we thought why go outside in the cold again. So we ate at the club, they had food available and it was reasonably priced.

Gillian and I had seats in the front row towards the far end. We had a blanket to sit on and were able to reserve our seats for the finals. If you were watching the games on Sportsnet you may have seen us.  Gillian is a big Rachel Homan fan so we were out early to watch them practice.

The game went back and forth until the 5th end.

A measurement in the 6th end to count one for Team Hanna.

20160124-D7K_9933

Jenn Hanna out curled Rachel Homan. Stealing 2 in the 7th and 3 in the 8th to all but seal the victory.

20160124-D7K_9943

Team Homan had almost no chance heading into the 10th, needing to steal 3 to force an extra end. She managed to steal one, but victory and the trip to the Scotties went to Team Hanna.

20160124-D7K_9945

The final score was 10-8.

Team Hanna celebrating the win.

Getting Her Sister Around

Angela has gone from chauffeuring Claudia around in the wagon to picking her up from school and chauffeuring her home in the car. Congratulations to Angela on passing her G2 road test today. After we got home from the DriveTest Centre in Oakville, I called to put her on the insurance and then she was off to pick up Claudia from school. Here they are in May of 2001.

Angela received her first conditional offer from Wilfrid Laurier University. She was accepted into the Bachelor of Kinesiology (BKin) program.

Carts Learning Curve

The Region of Peel has gone to a cart based collection system for garbage, organics and recyclables. Today was the first day for us, according to the calendar we start with garbage and organics. When I got home from work, Chloe and I went for a walk. It seems it will take some time for people to figure this out. After only one use, some of the carts weren’t holding up too well. Spot the wheel that has fallen off of this cart.

20160105-IMG-20160105-00028

Another cart with a broken wheel (on the street).

20160105-IMG-20160105-00029

A lot of people put out the wrong carts or all of their carts.

20160105-IMG-20160105-00030

Some people forgot that they were suppose to start using the carts.

20160105-IMG-20160105-00032

This person went to the trouble of shovelling out a nice flat spot for their carts, put them at the right distance apart, only to have someone park in front of them.

20160105-IMG-20160105-00033

This person put the cart the way, the handle is suppose to face the house, as well there are arrows on the lid indicating that they point to the street.

20160105-IMG-20160105-00034

Another garbage cart with a broken wheel.

20160105-IMG-20160105-00035

We’ll see what next week brings when it is suppose to be recyclables and organics.

Back to the grind…

After a good holiday, it’s back to work and school for us. Other than Hamilton and Scarborough we didn’t venture very far from home. We watched movies and played Rumoli. Here are a couple of photos of the girls before we drove Gillian back to school.
