Happy Canada Day!

It has been a few years since we have gone to the Japanese Canadian Community Picnic up at Caledon Place. When Shanna said she was coming for a visit this summer, she wanted to go to the picnic. Between the Tanabe and Uyeda clans there were 36 of us there.

jcccc-picnic-flyer

The weather started out a little threatening of rain, the dark clouds were rolling through when we arrived. The rain from the previous day had made for some soggy conditions. The area we use to set-up was off-limits and even the race field was too wet in the middle. Mark and Gaila were up there early to get a good spot close to the road and with a few trees.

20150701_D7K_6658

Melissa brought her puppy, Todd. Here he is with Chloe looking on.

Susan with Todd.

20150701_D7K_6666

Lunch time. Thanks to Mark for bringing his dining tent.

20150701_D7K_6667

20150701_D7K_6668

The sun kept coming and going early on. There was a good breeze for most of the day which kept the mosquitos at bay.

Kaiden.

20150701_D7K_6672

After lunch it was time for the races. Here are Claudia and Alex in the under 15 3-legged race.

20150701_D7K_6677

Angela and Gillian in the 16-40 3-legged race.

20150701_D7K_6682

Shanna and I in the 41+ 3-legged race, as you can see the race was over before we managed to get halfway down the field.

20150701_D7K_6688

Next up was the Under 15 Geta race.

20150701_D7K_6690

The Uyeda and Tanabe Clan cheering section.

20150701_D7K_6691

Emi, Claudia and Alex were doing well and even leading at the beginning.

20150701_D7K_6694

20150701_D7K_6695

And then the wheels started falling off and down they went for a DNF.

20150701_D7K_6696

Next up was the over 15 Geta race, our team was Danny, Gillian, Angela and me.

20150701_D7K_6699

Again we were doing well, but as we neared the finish line we lost some of the magic, and eventually finished in third place in the first heat.

20150701_D7K_6701

In the third heat it was Justin, Ryan, Raiden and Darin.

20150701_D7K_6705

Soon Justin started to go down.

20150701_D7K_6708

Followed by the rest of the team.

20150701_D7K_6709

They were back up but it didn’t last long and they ended with a DNF.

20150701_D7K_6711

Gillian and Angela were looking for some footwear for the shoe toss. Here are the girls with Auntie Shanna and Mom and their matching footwear.

20150701_D7K_6713

First up was the Under 15 shoe toss. Hard to believe that this is Claudia’s last year to compete in that age group.

20150701_D7K_6714

First up was Jesse.

20150701_D7K_6715

Then Claudia.

20150701_D7K_6716

And finally Emi. I think Emi’s shoe went backwards.

20150701_D7K_6717

Gillian and Lily running to the shoes. Notice they are both wearing different shoes on their feet.

20150701_D7K_6718

Next up was the 16-40 shoe toss. Here is Gillian with her attempt.

20150701_D7K_6719

Angela had a good toss, she hit the light pole that was in the middle of the field, it may have been a first place finish based on the projected trajectory. The one guy marking the shoes thought she should have won a prize, if not for distance than for accuracy. She did get a consolation prize.

20150701_D7K_6720

The men’s 16-40 shoe toss was next, with Darin, Justin and Ryan. Ryan was leading early on with the help of a good bounce.

20150701_D7K_6722

20150701_D7K_6723

20150701_D7K_6724

The women’s 41-59 came next with Gaila, Shanna, and Carolyn.

20150701_D7K_6725

20150701_D7K_6726

20150701_D7K_6727

Danny won the men’s 60+ event which was closet shoe to the pylon. Although his big clunky boots slowed us down in the Geta race, it did help his shoe toss, as there was no bounce once they landed.

20150701_D7K_6731

None of us fared very well in the Saikoro dice game.

20150701_D7K_6733

The water balloon toss was the last event.

20150701_D7K_6737

Danny was tossing to Gaila, Alex to Gillian and Jesse to Angela.

20150701_D7K_6738

Angela was wet and out, and Gillian was thinking she was going to get wet by the expression on her face.

20150701_D7K_6741

I don’t think Gillian’s toss made it back to Alex.

20150701_D7K_6743

Darin waiting for it to come down.

20150701_D7K_6744

Justin and Ryan made it to the final three.

20150701_D7K_6745

Lily getting ready for the candy scramble.

20150701_D7K_6746

Not sure if she knew what she was suppose to do.

20150701_D7K_6747

Angela and Claudia at the back (right) picking up the scraps.

20150701_D7K_6751

Kaiden with a few candies in his hat.

20150701_D7K_6753

As always the candy scramble seems to be the highlight.

20150701_D7K_6754

The girls with their loot.

20150701_D7K_6757

Bingo was next, we had a strong contingent, there were 18 games of bingo, 15 regular and 3 special games. Of those either a Tanabe or Uyeda clan player won 9 of the games. Gaila was the big winner of the last game which was a 50/50 game. It was a $80 pot that she split with one other person.

20150701_D7K_6760

Gillian avoiding the goose poop.

20150701_D7K_6761

Todd playing with some pop cans.

20150701_D7K_6763

A video of Todd, not sure Chloe knew what to make of Todd.

It was time for dinner!

20150701_D7K_6770

During dinner they called out the fukibiki draws and share the wealth. We won two of the fukibiki draws, Gaila and Mark won three, but we were all shut out on the Share the Wealth.

20150701_D7K_6771

Given the number of relatives that showed up for the picnic, it deserved some group photos. Here is photo of the first cousins, first cousins-once removed, second cousins and second cousins-once removed.

20150701_D7K_6795

Here is picture from 2008 of the girls and Grandpa and Grandma.

Here is group shot of the Uyeda clan. Mark has the classic “sitting in the front row of a school class photo”.

20150701_D7K_6798

And finally the Tanabe clan group photo.

20150701_D7K_6804

It had been seven years since we had been to the picnic. The last time was in 2008, you can see my blog entry from then here.

Backyard continued…

Some more photos of the backyard. The benches are from Ikea, we initially bought the single and double and then thought we should get another double, but they were sold out at all the GTA Ikea’s. Last weekend we were down in Burlington at the MEC and we stopped in and there was one left on a skid, they must of just got another shipment that day.

20150616_D7K_6594

The post in the foreground is the last remnant of the girls play structure, it was a support post for the swing set. I realized the other day that it was also a scratching post for Carla and the one corner is carved out from her claws. Guess it’ll have to stay now.

The first time Chloe saw the Dum Dum statue in the garden she started barking at it, she is good with it now.

20150616_D7K_6598

I gave Chloe a much needed haircut last weekend, she had a good goatee going, even a few people at the girls soccer games commented on it. Other than the fact she dripped more water than usual after getting a drink, Claudia and I liked it, Angela was impartial, but Susan and Gillian didn’t. So a couple of photos before I trimmed it back.

More Backyard Photos

I took some moon shots on the last full moon.

Our new neighbours that moved in last summer have a lot of bird feeders in their yard. Here is one of their feeders with an American Goldfinch (Spinus tristis).

Backyard Makeover

We finally got around to doing some work on the backyard. It has been a couple of years since we got rid of the girls ship play structure. Last year we had the Region of Peel Fusion Landscaping program come in and provide some suggestions. Here is a before shot.

20150606_D7K_6363

We ordered 2 yards of triple mix and 1 yard of cedar mulch. It came on the Thursday, after some rain on the Friday, it took half the day Saturday and most of Sunday to get all of it moved from the driveway to the backyard.

20150606_D7K_6364

A little hard to see, but we expanded the garden and covered with mulch. Added a new path for Chloe for when she runs out the door and straight for the back corner. I’ll try and do some better ones when it’s not so sunny.

20150613_D7K_6588

We added some solar powered spot lights. Here is a photo of the back at night. Notice our new addition the “Dum dum statue” (from Night at the Museum movie or the Easter Island statue).

New Telephoto-zoom Lens

I recently bought a new telephoto-zoom lens, it’s something I have been researching for awhile. I found it in stock on-line, so I bit the bullet and ordered it. It is a Tamron 150-600mm ultra telephoto zoom lens. It’s big! Here are some of my first photos using it in the backyard.

Canada Cord

Claudia received her guiding Canada Cord to wrap up her three years in Pathfinders. She also has her Provincial Recognition Ceremony coming up in a couple of weeks.

20150520_P1020778

Next year she is off to Rangers with Angela. It will be an exciting year as their group will be heading to Germany and Switzerland for 2 weeks.

20150520_P1020781

She also received her Pathfinder Citizenship Certificate.

20150520_P1020787

Claudia with Sue Dawe, her leader from her first two years of Pathfinders. Sue came to see the girls that started with her receive their Canada Cords. She was also Gillian and Angela’s Pathfinder leader, but retired from Guiding last year.

20150520_P1020788

After the ceremony we headed off to the soccer field for Claudia’s first soccer game.

20150520_P1020790 - Version 2

She played in the second half. Their team lost 4-2.

Happy Mother’s Day

We headed down to the Blue Jays game on Mothers Day. It was Josh Donaldson Replica Jersey Day. The University subway line from Downsview to St Clair West was shut down for maintenance, so we had to park at Kipling.
