Ice Storm 2013

What did you wake up to this morning? We headed out to church for 8:00 and on our way home we took a drive around the neighbourhood. When we turned down our street, we discovered it was blocked with fallen trees, after turning around and coming in the other way we went for a walk to see the damage. Our neighbour Lars lost a couple of branches.

Looking back to our house.

Around the corner from us we came across the fallen trees.

This tree in front of friends fell over and is totally blocking their driveway.

Another tree blocking the road.

Angela and Claudia in front of the destruction.

As I took this picture, we heard a loud crack…

…and turned around to see the one side of this tree go down…followed by another loud crack…

…only to see the other side go down in front of us.

That is the same tree that is on the right in this picture that I took as we were walking down earlier. You can just see Chloe by the tree, probably going to the washroom.

The ice made for some nice photos.

The ice coated trees in front of our house.

I moved our cars right up to the house just in case our tree decides to come down.

I guess we should heed the Peel Regional Police Twitter feed.

Curling Season

Congratulations to Angela for making the school curling team. She is playing on the Junior Mixed team again this season. All but one girl are back from last year’s team. Angela is throwing vice rocks. They have already played three games and are a perfect 3-0.

Early Happy Birthday Gillian

We headed out to Dundas on the weekend to take Gillian out for dinner for her birthday. Afterwards we had cupcakes.

Chloe looking a lot better with her haircut.

The girls.

Shaggy Dog

We finally got Chloe to the groomers for a haircut. She was a big mop.

Happy Halloween

Angela and Claudia carved their own pumpkins.

Claudia did an owl on her pumpkin.

Angela carved a Totoro on her pumpkin.

Claudia as some Minecraft dude, her friend Desiree and Angela.

The girls pumpkins lit up.

Congratulations Angela!

It was a busy week for Angela. On Thursday it was the Mount Carmel Academic Awards Assembly at the Church. Angela received her plaque for achieving honours last year. Then on Saturday morning, we were at Our Lady of the Airways in Malton for the 28th Annual Bishop’s Altar Server Awards. There were 46 parishes represented from Toronto-Downsview, Etobicoke, Brampton, Mississauga, Orangeville and Caledon. Bishop Boissonneau presided over the mass. There were 14 priests, 3 deacons and the Bishop on the altar. The awards are sponsored by the Serra Clubs in the GTA. At some point we should receive a photo of the Bishop with the 4 altar servers from St John of the Cross.

Gillian had been considered for the award the past two years but she hasn’t been able to make the ceremony so her name was withdrawn, apparently one of the criteria for being nominated in our parish for the award is whether you can attend the ceremony.

Turkey Overload

We enjoyed a full weekend of turkey, it started on Saturday at home, continued on Sunday at Lori and Dale’s and finished on Monday at Mom and Dad’s in Dundas. On Sunday we finally met Kaiden, Lily’s little brother.

Marley is big now, but still a puppy and getting into trouble.

Kaiden is 3 months old and was good through dinner.

We celebrated Alex’s and Sara’s birthday, Alex is the first two numbers, Sara’s the last two.

Angela enjoyed holding Kaiden.

Lily was just as entertaining.

Canada Cord

Angela received her Girl Guides of Canada Canada Cord at a ceremony held at the Living Arts Centre in Mississauga. The Canada Cord is the highest achievement that can be earned by a Pathfinder.

Each girl would go up and say what their favourite guiding memory was.

A cool photo of Angela walking out of the hall.

Angela with her Canada Cord and a carnation.

Here is Angela with fellow Pathfinder Heather and two of her leaders, Guider Sue and Guider Jenn.

Afterwards we walked over to Celebration Square next to City Hall.

Not much activity for a 4:00 on a Saturday afternoon. It was also Doors Open Mississauga.

The Marilyn Building.

Susan, Angela and Claudia.

Angela with her awards. Just realized now that her Canada Cord pin is covered. Congratulations Angela!

This is the blurb from Wikipedia on the Canada Cord requirements:

To earn the Canada Cord award, a Pathfinder must complete 20 select modules (about 4 activities each usually) participate, plan and lead 3 camps and/or leadership events, earn her community service award by working 15 hours of community service, participate in two Ranger meeting bridging activities, lead three bridging activities for younger girls (Usually guides or brownies, but occasionally sparks) complete a first aid course given by a recognized agency, and earn her citizenship certificate by doing 8 activities out of the be a model citizen module.

Apple Picking

This morning after breakfast we headed to Big’R Apple Farm to pick some apples. It is located only 6km from the house on Heritage Road.

We went for the macintosh apples.

There were lots, here are Angela and Claudia trying to reach the high ones.

When Claudia would pull one off, a couple more would fall off and hit Angela.

Angela taste testing.

We bought two bags.

After yesterday’s rain, the sun was out briefly while we were picking.

This one is for Gillian.

For those that didn’t want to pick from the trees, they could pick from the crates, I wonder if they go around and pick up the good ones off the ground.

A short video of Angela and Claudia picking apples.

The Past Week…

This past week Susan was down in London, Ontario for the Ontario Professional Planners Institute (OPPI) conference. The girls and I were on our own, and managed to survive. Mind you it was only two nights, not the four nights I’m usually away. Angela started with Rangers and Claudia is back at Pathfinders.
