Another Year Begins!

Angela and Claudia started school this week. Angela is going into Grade 10 and Claudia starts Grade 8.

End of Summer BBQ

We had an end of summer BBQ with the Skjold-Pettersen’s on Labour Day.

Not quite the spread as the Canada Day BBQ, but just as good.

Lars taking down the Canada Flag that was put up for our Canada Day BBQ.

Packed away until next summer. We missed Gillian and next year Maddy will be off to university.

Puzzle Girl

Claudia is on a puzzle kick. She started one at Grandma and Papa’s but wasn’t able to finish it before we left (although Grandma called today to tell Claudia she did finish it and that it had two missing pieces!). This is a 1000 piece puzzle, we’ll see how it goes.

Move In Day

It was move in day for first year students, Gillian’s allocated time was between 12-4 pm. It’s a lot different than 28 years ago when Lori and Dale dropped me off on Labour Day monday. You drive right up to the residence, all the belongings have to be labelled with name, residence and room number. You get out and they have student reps carry everything up to your room. Gillian and Susan went to get her key while Angela and I parked the car. Angela wouldn’t get out of the car with all the crazy students swarming it. Gillian is in a double room in Brandon Hall, it was an all girl residence when I attended, but like almost all of the residences now, it is co-ed.

Gillian all unpacked, kind of, she’ll need to go through what we unpacked for her and sort it out for herself.

Her room is at the end of a corridor and has a view of  the forest. The rooms have a wired internet jack, as well as wifi.

Angela planking on the roommates bed.

Chloe Bubble Chaser

Filmed Chloe chasing some bubbles in the backyard on the GoPro at 60fps and then played it back at 15fps.

Another Soccer Season Done.

Claudia and Angela finished their soccer seasons on the weekend. Angela’s team fared better this year, her team won the regular season and made it to the finals. Claudia’s team wasn’t as successful, going 1-8-2. There was a little imbalance in her league with two teams running up the scores each week.

Even though they were knocked out of the playoffs they continued to play “friendlys” during the remainder of the playoff schedule. The last couple of games Claudia was playing keeper. She played the second half of the final game.

Claudia has a great drop kick and can almost clear it to the mid-field.

Here she is making one of her few saves, she held them scoreless in the second half.

I keep suggesting she should play keeper, but she likes playing out. She scored three goals this season.

They lost the game 2-0, but it was close and still entertaining.

In the afternoon, Angela was playing in the finals.

Angela’s team went 9-1-1 through the regular season and then won their quarter and semi final games. The quarter final went to a shoot-out.

Angela enjoys playing defence, but a couple of times she played mid and even forward. She scored the first goal of her career this season.

Angela doing a throw in.

The other team took a first half lead and Angela’s team had their chances. They finally tied things up before the half was out.

Angela’s team kept pressing.

In the second half Angela played keeper. She got run over by an opposing player and she was down for bit.

She bounced back and took the kick.

Angela has a good drop kick as well.

There were a few close calls.

With about 2 minutes left and the score tied 1-1, Angela’s coaches switched goalies and put the first half goalie back in. In the event of a shoot-out it had to be the goalie on the field. Her team was awarded a penalty kick just outside the box and the keeper took it, she was able to get it through the crowd and it bounced in off of one of the opposing players in to the net for the lead.

Celebrating the goal.

About a minute later the ref blew the whistle to call time and Angela’s team had won the finals.

Angela had great coaches this year. His daughter is only 14, so will be in the same age grouping next year as Claudia, hopefully Claudia gets Angela’s coach.

Lining up for the final handshake.

Angela off to see a friend on the sideline.

Angela’s coach congratulating them on a terrific season and playoffs.

Posing with her trophy.

Posing for a goofy team photo.

Claudia’s Garden

Claudia planted a garden this year with cucumber, tomato and hot pepper. She got some plants from our neighbour Lars who had some leftovers when he planted his garden. She did quite well. Here she is with a couple of her cucumbers.

Bobblehead Game#3

We headed down to the Rogers Centre on August 11th for the final bobblehead game of the year. Gillian was able to get the day off work so she could join us. The TTC was shut down south of Bloor all weekend so we took the GO train into the city.

It was Brett Lawrie Bobblehead Day, the crowds seem bigger than the previous games.

Once we got in we collected our bobbleheads and went to the main Jays Shop. They have a display of Jays memorabilia including the two World Series Trophies.

It was a great day and the roof was open.

One of the rookie pitchers for the Oakland Athletics. He must have been carrying the snacks for the other bullpen pitchers in his unicorn backpack.

On the mound for Toronto was R.A. Dickey. He had a good game going 7 innings, getting out of a few jams and leaving with the score tied 3-3.

Colby Rasmus went 0-4 with a walk.

Josh Thole with a hit.

This guy brought his own Brett Lawrie cardboard cutout.

Brett Lawrie with his second stolen base. He had a good day at the plate as well going 3-5 with an RBI.

After the game we went for dinner at Xam Yu Restaurant in Chinatown. Trying to decipher the bill.

The restaurant across the street is open again under different management, it had been closed for awhile.

It was busier than it looks.

Sweet Jack Fruit. The The flavor is comparable to a combination of apple, pineapple, mango and banana.

From Spadina it was down along Dundas Street.

The AGO.

It looks like a couple of these bikes have been here for awhile.

Then we headed down University Ave back towards Union Station.

A funky sculpture in front of the Shangri-La Hotel on University Ave.

With the subway shut down there were all kinds of staff at the entrances helping people with the shuttle buses.

MAC Welcome Day

We headed out to McMaster for MAC Welcome Day. They run a series a talks geared to new students and parents and the opportunity to tour residences again. We spent the day with Gillian on campus. Afterwards we went to Andrew and Jeannette’s for a BBQ and swim.

I think Gillian was laughing after Uncle Andrew dropped one of the weenies on the deck.

Roasting Marshmallows

We moved our fireplace in the backyard. Since we have taken down the tower, we have more room. With us being able to spread out in the yard under the canopy of the trees, it makes it feel more like a campfire. Here are Angela and Claudia playing with the fire.
