Hilton Falls Hike

We went out to Hilton Falls Conservation Area on Saturday afternoon, there was a line-up to get into the parking lot, but it went pretty quick.

The falls, I don’t think we have been here when the falls are more than a trickle.

Claudia’s Co-op

Claudia is well into her co-op work placement this term. She is working for Rogers TV Mobile unit, mainly at the Hershey Centre doing Mississauga Steelheads hockey games. She did some orientation training earlier and did two games this past weekend. She helps to setup, broadcast and take down for each game. During the broadcasts she has done the audio and spends the game in the truck. So far she is enjoying it, although she was complaining about being sore from all the lifting of equipment and cables.

Here is a picture of Claudia setting up the audio .

MAC Homecoming

It was Homecoming Weekend at McMaster, my roommate Stam from our university days and I went down for the football game between McMaster and Guelph. It has been awhile since Stam had been on campus, the last time might have been when Susan and I got married and we did our photos on campus. A lot has changed since then. The rain held off and Stam, Angela, Gillian and I stayed until the end. Mac won 27-15 and are now ranked 8th in the CIS rankings.

img_20161001_154738

Afterwards we headed over to Matthews Hall, our residence for the first two years, it had been 30 years since we lived there, of course it has changed just as much as the campus has. Angela had one of her friends get us into the residence, and Stam and I gave Angela and Gillian a quick recap of some of our shenanigans. The concrete room in the basement that we use to play cave hockey in, is now a study room, with windows to the hallway and carpeting and lots of lighting. This is the bottom of the stairwell in Matthews, they have even repaired the floor since the first time we came with Gillian for a residence tour in grade 12.

img_20161001_163939

During our time Matthews was divided into five houses, we lived in North House, today it is now referred to Matthews North. Of the other four houses the only other one that remains is Centre, the other three no longer exist. Stam only has four more years before his daughter will be heading off to college or university, who knows maybe she’ll end up at her parents alma mater.

A Week in the Soo

My travel for work has been a little lighter this summer and fall, I was in Sault Ste. Marie for the week doing an installation and training at our site in the Turkey Lakes Watershed, about an hour north of the Soo. I stayed at the Delta Waterfront with a nice view of the St Marys River and the bridge to the US.

The first two days we had rain, before it cleared up towards the end of the week. This is the Chippewa River Falls.

Batchawana Lake, the fall colours were late this year, they were getting the same hot weather we were getting in the south. Although the hotels were full with the tour buses for the Agawa Canyon train ride.

Family Skype

This was the first weekend it was only Susan, Claudia and I. Gillian was working and Angela was busy at school, so they did not come home for the weekend. After some technical difficulties with Gillian’s Skype, we managed to do a group call. It only works if you are all using Skype on a computer or laptop. Angela was in her residence room and Gillian was in her bedroom at Lori’s. Here is a photo of the screen.

Claudia is Starting College?

Claudia is starting the Specialist High Skills Major program in Information & Communications Technology. It is a Ministry supported program that allows students to gain added experience in the Information Communication Technology sector and awards them additional accreditation on their diploma upon graduation. Part of the requirement is a 2 credit co-op work term which Claudia is doing this semester. She will soon be working for Rogers Television with their mobile unit, her orientation starts on the 21st.

She is also enrolled in the Humber Dual Credit Program, she starts next week with Orientation on Thursday and then it will be every Thursday afternoon at the North Campus up near Woodbine Racetrack. She is enrolled in Studio Production I. The Dual Credit program is a ministry-approved program that allow students, while they are still in secondary school, to take college courses that count towards the Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) and earn credit toward a postsecondary diploma. The best part is there is no cost to the student. Course tuition, textbooks, materials and transportation is provided by the Ontario Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities.

Celebrating Mom and Dad’s (belated) 60th Wedding Anniversary

Although their actual anniversary was on June 30th, they were in BC on holidays with Shanna. We didn’t get a chance to celebrate since they returned. Today we all got together at the Dragon Pearl Buffet. We were all able to make it, except for Melissa and Fernando and of course Shanna, David and Jesse. Here is Bear enjoying his dinner, it was Bear’s 1st birthday today.

A Day at The Ex!

We headed down to the Canadian National Exhibition on Saturday morning, we had been debating on whether to go and when to go. With Gillian working through the week, it left the weekends, Angela had gone with Dylan’s family last week, so it was just the four of us. Claudia wanted to do a few rides, here they are on The Crazy Mouse.

20160903-D7K_2893

It was good day at the Ex, we had to get back home to feed Chloe, our usual help (Dylan) is off to college in Timmins and no longer available. We are trying to find a replacement. We did the Enercare Centre Shoppers Market and warehouse outlets at the end and it was getting packed. We had parked in the underground parking, so it was easy getting out and only took us about 35 minutes to get home.

Happy Birthday Mom!

We headed out to Dundas on Thursday to celebrate Grandma Swan’s birthday. Susan brought lasagna and cake and Gillian was able to come after her penultimate day of work. Angela was busy with Orientation activities, trampoline dodge-ball, she’s off to a good start at university.
