We landed in Amsterdam!

The plane we took was really big, Claud and I were in the middle aisle.
There were some new movies to choose from, I watched 3. We also listened to some Dutch music. We are just waiting in the airport to go to Berlin!
Update you guys soon,
Love Ang

Japan Festival Mississauga 2016

After we dropped Angela and Claudia off at the airport, we headed down to Celebration Square at City Hall to check out the Japan Festival Mississauga.

20160710-D7K_2214

The Square was pretty busy, they had vendors set-up around the fountain.

This was one of the lineups for some of the food. There were lots of food vendors and each of them had ridiculous lineups.

20160710-D7K_2219

We didn’t stick around that long, it was hot and we didn’t feel like waiting in the lineups.

Off they Go!

After more than 2 years in the planning stage, Angela and Claudia and their Ranger group are off to Germany and Switzerland. We took them to Terminal 3 this afternoon, their flight was departing at 17:30 on KLM. Here they are with Gillian.

Here they are with their 3 leaders.

20160710-D7K_2208

Their flight was on time and they are now on their way to Amsterdam for their connection to Berlin.

20160710-D7K_2210

It will be a great two weeks of adventure for them.

Enjoying the Hot Weather?

I’m off for a couple of days this week, Susan is off the entire week, she’s been busy getting the girls ready for their trip. In the mornings it still bearable to sit out on the back deck and watch the birds. Here are some pictures of the new bird feeder I got for Father’s Day. There have been more House Sparrows (Passer domesticus) around the feeder recently.

20160707-D7K_2164

Chloe does a good job of keeping order in the backyard, she chases the squirrels and larger birds, but is getting better letting the smaller birds feed at the feeder. She has figured out that the birds drop pieces from the suet feeder which she likes.

Wide Angle

I bought a new lens this week, it is a Sigma 10-20mm ultra-wide angle lens. Here a couple of my initial shots with it.

2-Lo Bobblehead Day

We headed down to the Rogers Centre for the final game of the Cleveland Indians and Toronto Blue Jays. It was Troy Tulowitzki Bobblehead day.

IMG_20160703_124547

The first pitch, we were sitting up in section 539, row 6 seats 5-9. We were right by the left field foul pole.

20160703-D7K_2131

Claudia was taking some video with her camera.

20160703-D7K_2133

This was the bottom of the 6th inning when the Jays scored 8 runs, here we are celebrating the first 3 runs of the inning on Tulo’s 3 run homer to left.

20160703-D7K_2135

2-Lo crossing the plate. It was an awesome game that was never in doubt from the first inning when Russell Martin hit a 3 run shot. J.A. Happ pitched a great game with 11 strikeouts. The final score was 17-1.

20160703-D7K_2136

After the game we headed to Xam Yu for dinner, as soon as we sat down the lady asked if we wanted pork noodle soup. Maybe we have been there too many times.

It was a great day at the ballpark with outstanding weather.

20160703-D7K_2145

Here is the Troy Tulowitzki bobblehead, it is a lot nicer than the Josh Donaldson one we got earlier in the season. Gillian and I are hoping to add a Kevin Pillar in a few weeks.

Downy Woodpecker

It was a relaxing afternoon, sitting in the backyard watching the bird feeders. Today we had a female Downy woodpecker (Dryobates pubescens) feeding from our suet feeder.

20160702-D7K_2107

The girls bought me a new feeder for Father’s Day, it is made of metal (i.e. squirrels can’t chew it) and it contains the seeds better (when the squirrels hang off of it) and therefore the seeds last longer and not as much growing in the garden. I don’t think I have taken a photo of the new feeder yet.

20160702-D7K_2112

The downy woodpecker is the smallest North American woodpecker.

Happy Canada Day 2016!

We headed out to the JC Community Picnic on Canada Day for the 39th annual picnic at Caledon Place. Even though the forecasted weather was iffy we aren’t fair-weather picnickers. We arrived around 9:45 in the morning, the rain started on our drive up, but had stopped by the time we unpacked the car. As usual Mark brought his dining tent and a large tarp just in case the rain came again.

20160701-D7K_2008

There were lots of picnic tables to be had.

IMG_20160701_101121

It was pretty quiet early on as you can see by the amount of vehicles parked in the background.

20160701-D7K_2009

By the time everyone arrived, it was almost lunch time.

20160701-D7K_2010

20160701-D7K_2012

There were 14 of us this year, seems the threat of rain kept some of us away.

20160701-D7K_2013

After lunch it was time for the races.

20160701-D7K_2016

As you can see the skies cleared although it was a little windy at times.

20160701-D7K_2017

Angela and Claudia  and Darin and Eoin ready for the 16-40 3-legged race.

20160701-D7K_2019

Off and running.

20160701-D7K_2022

Angela and Claudia came in 3rd place, while Darin and Eoin ended up breaking their tie.

20160701-D7K_2025

Next up was the 41+ 3-legged race. Sansei Mark had his own cheering section from some of his students.

20160701-D7K_2029

Carey and I had a slow start.

20160701-D7K_2032

In the end we finished 4th or 5th, Mark and Gaila finished 3rd.

20160701-D7K_2034

There were only 2 teams in the 7-15 geta race.

20160701-D7K_2039

The girls and Dylan were up for the 16+ geta race.

20160701-D7K_2040

20160701-D7K_2041

In the first heat they had competition from Mark, Darin, Orla and Eoin.

20160701-D7K_2043

The girls and Dylan finished 2nd in their heat and moved on to the finals.

20160701-D7K_2049

They didn’t fare as well in the finals.

20160701-D7K_2052

There seemed to be some sort of breakdown.

20160701-D7K_2054

We were trying to figure out how long the geta skis were, Julie offered to lay down next to one, but we thought standing next to them would be easier. Julie is 5 ft and Dylan is over 6ft.

Next was the shoe kick, here is Angela.

I don’t think any of us were in the final group.

It was onto Bingo!

20160701-D7K_2084

Here is Claudia waiting for her bingo to be checked.

20160701-D7K_2085

Carey was one of the big bingo winners. He won one of the special games and here he is sitting on one of his two Canada chairs.

20160701-D7K_2086

It was a pretty successful bingo for the Tanabe-Uyeda’s, of the 15 regular games we won 6 bingos and Carey’s special game.

20160701-D7K_2087

After dinner they did the Fukubiki draws back at the Bingo Pavillon. Once again the Tanabe-Uyeda’s did well. Of the 34 prizes we won a combined 7 in total (21%). We won 3 including a pair of pearl earrings from Kobo Jewellery. Gaila won 3 prizes including a can of Shoyu and Julie won a prize.

20160701-D7K_2088

Here are the table of prize winners. Unfortunately none of us won the Share the Wealth draw this year. The top prize was $125. It was a great day and we had a good time, good food and good laughs.

Well Done Girls

Congratulations to Angela and Claudia on their terrific report cards. They picked them up today and did very well. Angela finished with an 88% university admission average and Claudia continues to excel with a 85% average.

Claudia is excited for next year as she starts her Specialist High Skills Major (SHSM) program in Information Communication Technology.

From the school website:

The program is for students in Grade 11 and 12 and is open to all students in university, collage, apprenticeship and workplace pathways. The program involves taking 4 core technology courses, a 2-credit technology coop opportunity, 3 additional elective credits  as well as additional experiential and reach ahead activities and certifications.

Our program is designed to give students additional technology skills and opportunities that are increasingly valuable at post-secondary level and beyond. Our Lady of Mount Carmel has put together an exciting program where students are gaining access to programming in partnerships with numerous local businesses, post-secondary institutions such Sheridan Collage and Guelph Humber as well as industry recognized professionals in the communications industry.

Claudia has a co-op placement at Rogers starting in the fall. It will be an exciting year for her.

Here is Angela’s grad photo.
