Down East

This week marked the start of Single Parent Season for Susan. I was down in Nova Scotia to kick of a busy few weeks of travel. My trip coincided with some heavy rainfalls for the Nova Scotia area. When I picked up my rental car, the girl asked which way I was headed, I said Keji and she said it wasn’t too bad down there.

Up towards Truro, there was heavy flooding due to the 100mm rainfalls and timing with high tide. Here is a picture from the internet of one of the on-ramps to the 102 highway. When we were down in August we drove on this street.

I was working down at Kejimkujik National Park, moving along on our new site within the park. I was down to do the installation of our new instrument field, working with the regional staff and some contractors. The site is located near an old farmstead from the 1920’s, so there are some areas of archeological interest. The guy in the picture with the white hard hat is an archeologist brought in to watch every bucketful of earth dug up. If something turned up all work would have to cease.

Not often you see a bobcat get stuck, but with the 85mm of rain the site received over Sunday-Monday and probably hitting a hole from the de-stumping, it did delay things awhile.

As well as digging and pouring cornet, we were trenching and running power and signal cables.

Things were moving along until the holes/sonotubes started to fill up with water.

We were back at it early Wednesday morning, you can see the dirt steaming in the early morning sun.

After replacing some of the sonotubes that had collapsed, the cement truck arrived and then things started moving. After a couple of days of standing around and watching, it was non-stop for most of the afternoon. Despite the tight schedule we completed this step and I didn’t have to reschedule my flight.

I’ll be back down in the near future to mark out our building location and finish up the instrument field.

The 14th First Day

Today was the 14th first day of school for us. Gillian is in grade 12, Angela grade 9 (11th first day) and Claudia is in grade 7 (9th first day). So far all smiles. Gillian was part of the Grade 9 Orientation “Link Crew”, so she got to wear their t-shirts instead of the uniform.

Another way to look at it, is we only have another 5 first days of school left. Yikes!

Swimming in Scarborough

We headed into Scarborough for lunch and a swim with Tim and his daughter Stella. It has been a while since the girls have seen Stella. Susan and I saw them at his movie showing back in July. We dropped Chloe off at Grandma and Grandpa’s, she was very excited to see them. The girls went for a swim before lunch. They were having a blast jumping off the diving board.

Stella going in.

After lunch the girls were back in the pool.

Gillian still testing the water, eventually she went in.

Stella fit in with the girls with her little pink patch of hair.

Here is Oscar, ever since I have known Tim, his Mom has had a Chow, this is the most laid back one.

With Gillian in the water they were able to do a little friendly of chicken.

Gillian and Claudia starting to go down.

Victory for Stella and Angela.

Switching up the sides.

Hmmm, only one common factor in both matches.

We had a great visit with Tim and Stella, looking forward to our next visit.

Where we’ve been

See the provinces and states we have been to on the Where we’ve been page.

Guitar World Fundraiser

On Sunday, Guitar World had their 10th Annual Rock n Roll Party in their parking lot. Guitar World is where the girls take their guitar and piano lessons. This is the first time we have been able to go. Here is the owner, Jim Toris who put it together. A great guy who always takes the time to say hi and make you feel welcome.

It was an all day affair going from 11-6. Students could sign up to play and the headliner was Phil X. He flew in from Los Angeles to play a show in Kitchener and a parking lot in Mississauga.

Phil X is a studio session guitarist who plays for recording artists like Avril Lavigne, Chris Daughtry, Kelly Clarkson and Alice Cooper to name a few.

He was playing with one member of The Drills and a guest drummer.

Phil X is Canadian and replaced Rik Emmett in the band Triumph on their album “Edge of Excess” and played with the band in 1992-93. He also played with Frozen Ghost and Aldo Nova and last year he substituted for Bon Jovi’s lead guitarist Richie Sambora on their last 13 tour dates.

Here he is playing riffs on his iPhone.

Bass guitarist Daniel Sprees.

The money raised from donations was for the Credit Valley Hospital foundation. Claudia and I really enjoyed the show, hopefully next year we can take in more of the other students.

Soccer Friendlies

Claudia and Angela had their last soccer game of the season on Sunday. They changed the playoffs this year and went to an elimination style. Both of their teams were eliminated, but all of the teams played a friendly on Sunday. Claudia’s game was at 9:00 am bright and early.

Unfortunately they lost 2-1, with the help of some shoddy refereeing.

Angela’s game was at 1:45 pm, she was heading the ball left right and centre.

That’s the ball coming off of her head.

This photo was more by accident, then by design, but I think it looks pretty cool.

Angela’s team won their game 2-1.

Day 20: Heading Home

After 19 days on the road we were heading home, here are the girls watching movies on their iPods.

Our drive today took us up through New Hampshire, across Vermont, into New York State and back into Ontario. This is somewhere on Lake Champlain.

Near Rouse’s Point, NY.

Welcome to New York.

We could see the border, but we were not going through Montreal, instead we crossed at Ogdensburg, NY which leads to Johnstown, ON. It spits you out onto the 401 near the 416 highway to Ottawa.

One final stop at the Big Apple in Colborne, ON.

Unfortunately, all their porducts are labelled “May contain…”.

The main reason for stopping was to add another photo to our “Big Things” collection.

This has to be one of the few things that is still free. You can climb up inside the apple to an observation deck, to see the 401.

One last goofy photo.

When we pulled into G-ma and G-pa’s driveway, Chloe was excited to see us back, here she is running back and forth to each of us.

Here are the girls on day 3 of our trip, the photo I took on day 1 was blurry, so we had to do a re-take.

Here is the back of the car after we pulled into our driveway. Since we stopped to pick up Chloe on our way home, we had to squeeze all her stuff in the car as well, so even if the girls were in the back seat, there was no way we’d see them.

Our drive today, we left Manchester, NH at 7:18 am, crossed the border at 2:39 pm and pulled into G-ma and G-pa’s driveway at 6:00 pm. We had a great supper and visit before loading up one more time for the final leg. I’ll post the trip summary once I crunch some of the numbers. Thanks for following along on our road trip to PEI, hope you enjoyed it as much as we did.

Day 19: Recharge Day

Today was a rest day to recharge our batteries before heading home Saturday morning. We did some shopping, taking advantage of the no sales tax in New Hampshire. The first stop was the Hobby Lobby, it is kind of like a Michaels.

From there it was over to the Mall of New Hampshire which is pretty close to our hotel. Here is Gillian sitting with Ernie and Bert.

It is a long driving day tomorrow to Scarborough to pick up Chloe before heading home.
