Happy Birthday G-ma and G-pa!

We had Mom and Dad, Carolyn and Danny and the kids out for dinner for Mom and Dad’s birthday. The plan was to order from our usual Chinese food take-out restaurant. When I went to call, there was a recording that they were closed for the week. Who closes a restaurant during March Break? After some scrambling we ordered some food from another place close-by, their portions weren’t as large, but it was still good. Afterwards it was time for cake. Happy Birthday Dad!

Happy Birthday Mom!

Angela lighting the candles again for her turn.

Happy Birthday Angela!

Alex, Claudia, Gillian, Angela and Emi.

Visit to Dundas

We headed in to Dundas during March Break to visit Grandma and Papa and the Sweetness Bakery. A Mr.T truck on King Street.

Chloe on King Street.

Some excitement on the street.

Looking down towards Marlatt’s.

The girls up ahead.

Hard to tell it was the middle of March.

Kejimkujik 2

What was suppose to be one trip down to Nova Scotia to mark out a new site, turned into two trips a week apart. The first week I rented a Mazda CX7 cross-over.

The new site has been cleared, not an easy feat inside a National Park.

Due to some mis-calculations of the original marking done by our counter-parts in the Regional office, we were off 5-10m in the clearing of the trees. Back on a plane, I returned the next week to straighten out the marking of the trees. One of the difficulties is the site encompasses part of an old farmstead within the park, therefore there is the possibility that during de-stumping or construction it may disturb some artifacts from when it was a farm back at the turn of the century.

Logs stacked along the access road.

Nova Scotia Bound

Work has me heading down to Kejimkujik National Park in Nova Scotia this week to do some work on our new site in the park. I’m flying down Wednesday and back on Thursday night. Between this site, a new one up near Longlac, ON and three new ones out west, it will be a busy year ahead.

Uncle Tak’s Show In Vancouver

If you happen to be in Vancouver during the next month, there is a showing of Uncle Tak’s paintings at the Equinox Gallery until March 7, 2012. If you prefer the Inside Passage and Queen Charlotte Islands work over his early abstract work, then this is the one for you. From what I can find, his show at the McMaster Art Gallery will be in the autumn.

Awards Day

The girls had their award assemblies on Friday morning. Claudia received an award for her Learning Skills and Work Habits. Congratulations Claudia!

Angela receiving her Academic Award from the principal.

 Congratulations Angela!

Jesse In The News

Our nephew Jesse was in the Trail Daily Times with David. Here is the photo from the papers website. Click on it to read the caption.

Guitar World

Angela and Claudia are still doing their piano and guitar lessons every week. This week Claudia’s teacher stuck his head into Angela’s room and told her teacher not to teach her too much otherwise her parents will expect more from Claudia. Both their teachers are good and they enjoy going. Angela practices everyday without any nagging. We still enjoy sitting in the store while we wait during their lessons.

The couches in the waiting area are directly under the bass guitars.

If Gillian played guitar this would be the strap she would have. It has been on the rack for some time.

Rick Mercer Report

I managed to get four tickets to the Rick Mercer Report live taping for Friday night, Susan and I were going to go with friends, but plans changed, so Angela and Claudia came with us. Gillian had her Grade 11 semi-formal that she was attending. The taping is at the CBC Broadcasting Centre on Front Street. Here is Roy Thompson Hall.

Looking north-west from near Metro Hall.

Near the eternal flame outside Metro Hall. We had dinner at Sushi Oniwa Japanese Restaurant on King Street W. We were headed to the Swiss Chalet that was next door, but it has since closed down.

The girls waiting for the show to begin.

He does some crowd interaction at the beginning.

For the segments of the show that are done on location, he comes out and introduces the segment and then they play it on the video screens. This week he was in Ottawa at the Governor General’s residence and working at the Chateau Laurier. The show will air on Tuesday February 14th.

During the show he is always chatting with the floor director.

Rick waving to someone in the audience.

The audience holds 350 people, and almost every friday night for 20 weeks it is full. The best chance for rush tickets are if there is a snow storm, since the tickets are free, people are more apt to not show up if the weather is bad.

Waiting for the crew to install his desk.

The end of show 15 of season 9.

The wait to meet Rick Mercer wasn’t that long, or we got out of the studio quicker. He liked Claudia’s panda hat. He talked about the pandas coming to Canada and what citizenship a baby panda would be if born here.

The Mr Dressup display in the CBC Museum.

Angela and Claudia in front of Casey and Finnegan’s treehouse. The original show had gone off the air before either of the girls were born.

Both Angela and Claudia really enjoyed the show.

Speeches

It’s that time of year again, for Angela and Claudia it means speech time. This is Angela’s last speech for elementary school. Her topic this year was World Mysteries. Claudia chose The History of Monopoly as her topic. Both girls advanced to the gym from their classes.

Unfortunately they only gave one days notice on who was going to the gym, so neither Susan or I could make it. Angela placed second in the intermediate speakers, however the boy who won is going to Mexico this week so since he cannot make the Family of Schools finals, Angela gets to go in his place.

Congratulations to both Claudia and Angela for a job well done!
