Thanksgiving

Monday the girls and I went out to Mom and Dad’s for some more turkey. For dessert we had cake for Alex’s recent birthday. Emi and Claudia waiting for cake.

Gillian and Angela.

Birthday boy Alex!

10 years old.

He needs some practice blowing out the candles.

Great Thanksgiving Weekend

The weather for Thanksgiving weekend was great, so Angela, Claudia and I headed over to the school to play some soccer. I took a picture of this tree in the summer when it was green. My goal is to get one in the winter and spring.

Angela was having a little trouble climbing up another tree.

Finally she made it.

Claudia on the same tree.

Chloe and I walked through the forest there and back, the girls were on their bikes.

Chloe Around The House

Some photos of Chloe from around the house. Chloe sitting in the sun.

Chloe started to look a little shaggy again.

Advanced Voting and the One That Got Away

I voted yesterday at an advance poll for this Thursday’s Ontario election. I’ll be in Quebec and I wasn’t sure if I’d make it back in time on Thursday to vote. Yesterday was the last day for advance voting and I got there around 7:30 pm, there was a lineup and I waited for half an hour before I could vote. I watched most of the debate when I was in Owen Sound on Tuesday, but I missed the part where they were comparing the “big one that got away”.

I found this blurb on a website and it’s funny how fishermen and politicians have so much in common.

It is often said that fishermen are habitual liars, albeit not malicious ones. In fact, all anglers do, at times, spin rather unbelievable “fish tales”, embellishing their stories in varying degrees (depending on who they are trying to impress at the time) with exaggerations of the size of fish caught or lost. To be fair to anglers, however, it is important to recognize that few, if any, are trained in the science of measurement. Compounding the problem is the fact that most fishermen are among the world’s worst estimators, guilty of not only stretching the truth a bit, but the size of fish as well. As far as the measurement of gamefish goes, arbitrary measures are pretty much standard with most anglers. (reference:http://www.ontariofisherman.com/measurement-fish.htm)

Kinghurst Forest Nature Reserve

I was up in the Owen Sound area on Tuesday and Wednesday this week. The forecast earlier in the week didn’t look promising, but I managed to miss the rain on Tuesday morning and was back home before the rain started on Wednesday. Our site is located at the Kinghurst Forest Nature Reserve located near Chatsworth, Ontario.

Almost every step you take results in a frog jumping out of the way. The operator was telling me that in the spring, there were snapping turtles all over the place laying their eggs, only to have the raccoons come and dig them up.

At the end of the day I was able to take a walk around some of the property.

The Kinghurst Reserve has been designated as a provincially signific Life Science Area of Natural and Scientific Interest (ANSI).

There is a section of forest where many of the trees are 250-300 years old, and tower over 100 feet in height.

There are many woodland ponds, open bogs and swamp forests.

Some early fall colours.

Some hard work by an overly ambitious beaver.

Some of the swamp forest.

An old well that still works.

Moss on rock.

There are still many apple trees from the time it was an active farm.

Harrison Lake is located across from the reserve.

Google Tribute To Jim Henson

Today on the Google Search home page there is a Google Doodle tribute to what would have been Jim Henson’s 75th birthday. The characters vaguely resemble the google letters.

A little surfing around and I came across this on YouTube. Someone uploaded the Google Doodle Muppets singing the Black Eyed Peas “Boom Boom Pow”. Hilarious.

Back on the Road

I was back on the road this week, down in Frelighsburg, Quebec.

Our site is located at an Agriculture Canada Research Sub-station located about 5km from the Vermont border.

The monitoring site. Environment Canada has been in the news a lot these days with the looming program and job cuts, it’s always better to fly under the radar.

One of the many butterflies around the site.

I’ll be back down there in a couple of weeks to finish an installation with some American colleagues who are doing a co-located study.

PA Day

The girls had a PA Day last Friday. We headed out to Rattlesnake Point Conservation Area for a walk with Chloe. If she didn’t have leaves stuck to her it was burrs.

The one trail leads along the edge of the escarpment.

Looking across to Mt Nemo.

Angela and Claudia climbing the rocks.

Gillian taking the easy way up.

There are a lot of rock climbing areas. There are points all along the top with ropes hooked on.

Claudia trying to get over the branch.

Watch out below!

Chloe finally found a portion of the wall short enough for her to see over.

We learned today that Chloe doesn’t like stairs she can see through. There were grated stairs that lead down the escarpment. She wouldn’t go down, so Angela carried her down to the first landing. Then we tried to get her to come down another flight and she wasn’t having any of it.

Some of the escarpment walls.

Claudia and Angela climbing up for a photo op.

There were quite a few people rock climbing while we were there.

After Rattlesnake Point we headed to Hilton Falls Conservation Area. On the way to the falls Chloe started going down the grated stairs, although these ones weren’t as open as the other ones.

The falls were more of a trickle, we’ll have to go back when the creek is running a little more.

Part of the old sawmill waterwheel.

The girls and I at Hilton Falls.

They had the fire pit going, too bad we didn’t bring any marshmellows.

The top of the falls.

Started off on another trail until we realized it was for mountain biking only.

The walk out to the falls was 4km one way. The weather was great and we had great time on the trails.

Vacation Video

Some of the video we took while away on our trip. Used the Panasonic Lumix TS3 camera to record video. The original records in Full 1080p HD. The first video is from Popeye and Bluto’s Bilge-Rat Barge ride at Universal’s Islands of Adventure.

Here we are on Big Thunder Railroad, one of the few roller coasters that Susan will ride. She briefly forgets where she is as she lets go and raises her arms.

The girls catching the wave at Typhoon Lagoon.

When we were at Hollywood Studios the girls were able to meet Phineas and Ferb.

Some of the dinner show entertainment at the Hoop Dee Do Review.

The girls jumping the waves at Tybee Island.

First Day of School!

Our 13th “First Day of School”. The girls had a good first day, got their classes and teachers sorted out. Here are the girls and Chloe later in the day.

After school they were out in the backyard on the ship with Maddy from next door.

I tried to find a picture from their younger years and found this one from 2004, seven years ago, not sure what Gillian is wearing on her head. The girls are on the ship, note our little maple tree in the background.

Chloe looking pretty happy to have everyone back home.
