Rain Caddy 1.0

Ever wonder how much rain has fallen in the last 7 days? I came across an web site that takes the guess work out of it, it is called Rain Caddy. All you do is enter your postal code and it will find the closest Environment Canada weather station and give you the results.

I updated the local weather display on the website, I replaced what I had (originally from the Environment Canada website) with a php script that pulls the same data from the EC website. The old one was flash based which didn’t work on the ipad.

The Guitar World

Claudia has been taking guitar lessons this year, she has been enjoying them, she moved from Monday nights to Wednesdays. She really likes her teacher, Dion, and we have run into a few people who have had him as a teacher and they all say good things. Her lessons are 30 minutes and I enjoy sitting in the store while I wait for her lesson. The owner and people that work there are very good and go out of their way to help people. If your looking for a guitar or lessons, check out The Guitar World.

Mississauga Celebration Square

Saturday night Susan and I went to dinner at Brad and Lesley’s house. Lesley is a colleague of Susan’s. After a fabulous dinner we headed over to the new Celebration Square by City Hall. The official opening was last week. This weekend there were a few events to coincide with the International Indian Film Academy (IIFA) events. The main act was “delhi 2 dublin” a band from Vancouver that mixes Indian music with Celtic music.

On both sides of the stage there are state of the art media screens.

The band was really good, there was a drummer, couple of fiddle players, vocals, guitarist and a DJ spin dude.

A couple of giant balloons were tossed into the crowd.

We’ll be going down to the square more often this summer. On Thursday nights they will be showing movies on the big screens.

They have increased the size of the fountain pool, in the winter it will be frozen for ice skating. They have also opened up the area around the square.

Sunday afternoon they are attempting a Guinness World Record by hosting the world’s largest Bollywood dance class.

Anglers Trail Resort

We were staying the night at Anglers Trail Resort. Don’t let the name fool you, it is a resort if your idea of a resort is a 70’s cabin sitting on a lake in northern Saskatchewan. It sits on the shores of Lac La Plonge.

Lac La Plonge

We were there on the longest day of the year, so it was light out at 11:00pm. This shot was the next morning, not much difference.

The resort is at the end of the road. The dog on the right kept bring rocks and dropping them at your feet to play fetch.

The place was full, the lake has pike and lake trout.

Our ride for the trip was a GMC Yukon with a 167 litre fuel tank, we couldn’t figure out why the gauge was barely moving.

The last time I was here it was -20 deg C, someone asked me if I’d rather have the cold or the blackflies, I’ll take the cold anyday!

Blackflies, Mosquitos, and Lady’s Slipper

From Saskatoon, it was on to Prince Albert and then up to Pinehouse Lake the following day. After a brief stop in Pinehouse Lake to meet with the local conservation officer, it was into the bush.

When we got out of the vehicle, the blackflies descended around us. As we moved into the bush they were joined by the mosquitos. They actually weren’t that bad, I didn’t have to use my bug jacket, as long as you were moving it was okay. But once we got to where we were going, it was time for the bug juice. Here is one of the trees we marked.

On the way out we spotted some Pink Lady’s Slipper (Cypripedium acaule).

Further along we came across a Spruce Grouse (Falcipennis canadensis).

We had lucked out with the weather and bugs, not so much with the roads, due to all the rain they had received the gravel roads weren’t so good. The last 100 km is gravel/dirt roads and it took over 90 minutes. It was back to Beauval for the night.

Back on the Road

After a ten week stay at home, I’m back on the road this week. I went through Saskatoon again today on my way to Prince Albert. Tomorrow it is on to Pinehouse Lake for a meeting with our Public Works project manager at our new site. Not looking forward to the black flies and mosquitos. The challenge will be finding the trees that I marked back in December.
