A Week in the Soo

I spent the past week up in Sault Ste. Marie. I was doing work at our site about an hour north east. Weather was pretty good, only one day of rain as we were coming out of the camp, otherwise it was hot and sunny. Stayed at the Delta Hotel downtown right on the river.

There is a boardwalk trail that goes along the waterfront.

All the pollution from the American side of the border makes for a nice sunset.

Testing Giant Jenga

We finished making our giant Jenga. Claudia and I tested it out tonight, in the end I lost but didn’t lose any toes.

A video of Claudia successfully making her move.

Susan said she could hear the crash from inside.

Racoons, Possums, and Skunks

We had them all in our backyard this past week. The racoons and possum use the fences as their highway. Angela saw four raccoons and a possum on the fence together. One morning when I was heading to work, I saw the raccoon posse over on the next street.

On Monday night, Chloe got hit by a skunk in the backyard, it wasn’t a direct ht, so that was good. We are getting better at it, we had everyone concocting the mixture, and we contained Chloe to the back deck. I changed my clothes, put gloves on and scrubbed her down outside. The girls rounded up the air freshers for inside the house and none of us smelled like skunk the next day.

On Thursday morning, I let Chloe out and there was the possum on the back fence, once it cleared our yard it just froze on the fence and didn’t move. This was the best I could get for a picture.

Aaron Sanchez Bobblehead Day

On Sunday we headed down to Rogers Centre for the Blue Jays game against the Houston Astros. Unfortunately Angela had to work so she wasn’t able to join us.

The roof was closed when we got in, but before the game they opened the flap over in left field which usually means they are opening the roof.

Carey and Julie were at the game sitting in the same section as us.

The roof almost open, during the 5th inning, it started to rain bit but they left the roof open, maybe they were hoping for a rain delay based on the way the Jays played.

We were sitting in Section 536L, seats 101-104.

The announced crowd was 46,622. It was the shortest game we have seen, we left in the top of the 7th when the Astros were leading 11-0. Before we could clear the loudspeakers outside the stadium, it was 15-0. As I told the girls, I would have turned the game off when it was 6-0.

Our next game is on July 30th, it is Red Jersey giveaway.

The final boxscore, it was the 4th worst loss in Blue Jays history.

Obon 2017

On Saturday morning we headed into the city for the Obon ceremony at Mount Pleasant Cemetery. The crowds are dwindling.

You can now find Bachan and Jiichan’s graves on-line at findagrave.com.

They had an additional service for the Skeena River Memorial. They filled two bags with dirt from the cemeteries at Prince Rupert and Port Essington and brought them to be interred in Mount Pleasant. The minister was Yoshimichi Ouchi, he said to call him Yoshi.

We ended up at Uncle Jay and Uncle Tosh’s plots.

Giant Jenga

The girls and I are making a Giant Jenga game for Mark and Gaila’s family get-together in August.

We started with some 2×4’s.

And ended up with 54 game pieces. Angela and Claudia have been sanding them before we apply some finishing paste wax.

Soccer Season

Soccer season is well under way and the girls team is doing pretty good. Claudia has played goal every game.

She has made some great saves.

I didn’t get any photos of Angela due to the game being called. One of their team mates hurt her leg and they had to wait for an ambulance to come to cart her off the field to the hospital.

Backyard Activity

A fledgling in the tree.

Gillian brought home some potted roses that she got at work in celebration of Canada 150.

Happy Canada 150!

Happy Canada Day! Due to all of the recent rain, the Japanese Canadian Community Picnic was cancelled earlier in the week. The Caledon Place grounds were unsuitable for the picnic as most parts were under water. We came up with a backup plan and decided to hold the picnic at our place. Here is Angela hanging up the Canada Flag to start the day.

Lunch time, everyone brought what they had planned to bring to the picnic.

The forecast was cloudy with sunny periods and a risk of thunderstorms. Mark brought his tarp, and while we enjoyed the sunny periods while we ate lunch, soon after the rain came. Of course rather than put the tarp on earlier, we waited for the rain to start. It then became a group effort as we scrambled to set it up. It turned out rather well…

…until we discovered that the last time Mark used it was to hold 15 yards of garden soil, needless to say it did give us the smell of being in Caledon or on the farm.

With the limited space, we couldn’t do the races or shoe kick, but we did play some Bingo.

The first winner of the day was Jeff.

Gillian was the Bingo caller and she did a great job.

Mark was the official Bingo checker once a winning card was called. Auntie Margie won the second game.

The prize table, thanks to Auntie Margie who came with a bag full of prizes.

The tarp did a great job of keeping us dry.

The Bingo checker handing his beer off so he could verify Susan’s card.

Claudia had a winning card.

Carolyn had a good Bingo.

Darin also had a good Bingo.

Jeff and Belinda were able to join us this year, they had to depart after Bingo. We were happy they could make it this year.

The final game had the grand prize of a giant Toblerone and then Dad kicked in a $5 bill to go with it.

It was Lori who filled her card first. It was the second win of the day for her.

Mark giving it the thumb up.

After dinner we did a group photo.

It was a good day all around, it wouldn’t be the same without some rain, at least this year we didn’t have to contend with the wind.

On the court behind us, there was a fireworks show.

Toronto Wolfpack

On Saturday evening, I met Stam down at Lamport Stadium to take in the Toronto Wolfpack vs Hunslet RLFC. The Wolfpack are the first trans-atlantic major professional sports team.

The Toronto Wolfpack are in the English Rugby Football League (RFL), playing in the Kingstone Press League 1 competition. The tickets were $21 for General Admission.

There are only 3 Canadians on the team, the rest are mainly from England and Wales, others like Fuifui Moimoi are from Tonga.

Once we clued into the rules, it started to get interesting. There are 13 players aside.

It was a great night for the game. As you can see we watched from all parts of the stadium. There are two halves each 40 minutes with a 15 minute break.

There is a beer garden at the north end with all craft brewers.

The Wolfpack extended their undefeated season to 12-0, defeating Hunslet 56-12, the announced crowd was 6,042. The team is aiming to win promotion to the 2nd tier Championship League for next season.
