Angela turned 16 this year and on the 29th we were waiting at the Driver’s Centre in Brampton for her to take her G1 test. She passed with a perfect score which she was sure to tell Gillian.
Curling Season
Congratulations to Angela for making the school curling team. She is playing on the Junior Mixed team again this season. All but one girl are back from last year’s team. Angela is throwing vice rocks. They have already played three games and are a perfect 3-0.
Congratulations Angela!
It was a busy week for Angela. On Thursday it was the Mount Carmel Academic Awards Assembly at the Church. Angela received her plaque for achieving honours last year. Then on Saturday morning, we were at Our Lady of the Airways in Malton for the 28th Annual Bishop’s Altar Server Awards. There were 46 parishes represented from Toronto-Downsview, Etobicoke, Brampton, Mississauga, Orangeville and Caledon. Bishop Boissonneau presided over the mass. There were 14 priests, 3 deacons and the Bishop on the altar. The awards are sponsored by the Serra Clubs in the GTA. At some point we should receive a photo of the Bishop with the 4 altar servers from St John of the Cross.
Gillian had been considered for the award the past two years but she hasn’t been able to make the ceremony so her name was withdrawn, apparently one of the criteria for being nominated in our parish for the award is whether you can attend the ceremony.
Canada Cord
Angela received her Girl Guides of Canada Canada Cord at a ceremony held at the Living Arts Centre in Mississauga. The Canada Cord is the highest achievement that can be earned by a Pathfinder.
Each girl would go up and say what their favourite guiding memory was.
A cool photo of Angela walking out of the hall.

Here is Angela with fellow Pathfinder Heather and two of her leaders, Guider Sue and Guider Jenn.
Afterwards we walked over to Celebration Square next to City Hall.
Not much activity for a 4:00 on a Saturday afternoon. It was also Doors Open Mississauga.

This is the blurb from Wikipedia on the Canada Cord requirements:
To earn the Canada Cord award, a Pathfinder must complete 20 select modules (about 4 activities each usually) participate, plan and lead 3 camps and/or leadership events, earn her community service award by working 15 hours of community service, participate in two Ranger meeting bridging activities, lead three bridging activities for younger girls (Usually guides or brownies, but occasionally sparks) complete a first aid course given by a recognized agency, and earn her citizenship certificate by doing 8 activities out of the be a model citizen module.
Another Soccer Season Done.
Claudia and Angela finished their soccer seasons on the weekend. Angela’s team fared better this year, her team won the regular season and made it to the finals. Claudia’s team wasn’t as successful, going 1-8-2. There was a little imbalance in her league with two teams running up the scores each week.
Even though they were knocked out of the playoffs they continued to play “friendlys” during the remainder of the playoff schedule. The last couple of games Claudia was playing keeper. She played the second half of the final game.
Claudia has a great drop kick and can almost clear it to the mid-field.
Here she is making one of her few saves, she held them scoreless in the second half.
I keep suggesting she should play keeper, but she likes playing out. She scored three goals this season.
They lost the game 2-0, but it was close and still entertaining.
In the afternoon, Angela was playing in the finals.
Angela’s team went 9-1-1 through the regular season and then won their quarter and semi final games. The quarter final went to a shoot-out.
Angela enjoys playing defence, but a couple of times she played mid and even forward. She scored the first goal of her career this season.
Angela doing a throw in.
The other team took a first half lead and Angela’s team had their chances. They finally tied things up before the half was out.
Angela’s team kept pressing.
In the second half Angela played keeper. She got run over by an opposing player and she was down for bit.
She bounced back and took the kick.
Angela has a good drop kick as well.
There were a few close calls.
With about 2 minutes left and the score tied 1-1, Angela’s coaches switched goalies and put the first half goalie back in. In the event of a shoot-out it had to be the goalie on the field. Her team was awarded a penalty kick just outside the box and the keeper took it, she was able to get it through the crowd and it bounced in off of one of the opposing players in to the net for the lead.
Celebrating the goal.
About a minute later the ref blew the whistle to call time and Angela’s team had won the finals.
Angela had great coaches this year. His daughter is only 14, so will be in the same age grouping next year as Claudia, hopefully Claudia gets Angela’s coach.

Treetop Trekking
Angela and the other third year Pathfinders were able to go to Treetop Trekking at Horseshoe Valley Resort. Here are the girls getting some instructions from one of the guides.
Angela only about three feet off the ground.
It was off to the Purple course to start.
Angela on one of the early zip lines.
They had to swing over to the next platform. Here is Angela getting over.
There were paths under all of the courses, so we walked around watching them for awhile.
Then we headed back to the car for some lunch and a nap.
Here is Angela.
Chloe was a tired dog at the end of the day.

The Trilliums (Trillium grandiflorum) were in bloom. The seeds of a trillium are dispersed by ants.

Angela way up.
The girls were doing the Big Zip as the last thing, so Claudia was able to join them. Here she is getting suited up.
The Big Zip is 983ft long and you can get up to speeds of 40 km/h. There goes Angela.
When Susan paid for Claudia, the girl gave her the resort discount and then she called her back and wrote 2X on her wrist band so she could go twice.

Angela’s Advancement
Angela had her Advancement Ceremony from Pathfinders tonight. Not quite as elaborate as Gillian’s was a few years ago. They joined with some of the other area guiding groups. The leaders have decided to continue on until this years first year girls (including Claudia) finish up. They will not be taking on any additional girls in the fall.
Angela with her leaders. She is moving on to Rangers next year. Angela has completed her Canada Cord and she’ll receive it at a ceremony in September. Well done Angela!

Curling Final 2….continued
Congratulations to Angela and her junior mixed curling team. They won a nail-biter in the final played this afternoon at the Brampton Curling Club. It was a close game that came down to the last rock. It has been four weeks since they were originally scheduled to play. Here they are shaking hands after after watching their opponents last rock miss its mark. The final score was 4-3 in six ends.

The final score, St Michael stole one in the third and fourth ends, but Mount Carmel stole one in the sixth and final end. Angela’s skip called a good game and made a great shot in the fifth end to setup a draw for 2 points to tie the score heading into the final end.
