Day 9: Syracuse Chiefs

We started making our way back home today. We had one final stop in Syracuse, NY to watch the Syracuse Chiefs play the Scranton Wilkes-Barre RailRiders for some Triple A baseball.

You would barely notice that you were entering New York State.

Looking back up towards the concourse.

20140804_D7K_4046

The Syracuse Chiefs are the Triple A affiliate of the Washington Nationals. They were down early to the Scranton Wilkes-Barre RailRiders, here is the first run coming home to score. The RailRiders are the NY Yankees farm team.

The view from the concourse. The Chiefs rallied back a couple of times to take the lead for good in the bottom of the 7th.

20140804_D7K_4074

Angela enjoying her cotton candy, when we were at Fenway she wanted some, but the guy never came around again and then the game was over.

20140804_D7K_4076

The field has natural turf, from 1997-2007 the field was Astroturf. The Syracuse Chiefs were the Triple A affiliate of the Toronto Blue Jays from 1978 to 2008.

20140804_D7K_4077

A view from our seats, we were in row 1 seats 1-4. We had to look around the obstruction to see certain angles of the field but still good seats.

20140804_D7K_4078

It also made it easy to get a game ball from Chiefs catcher Jhonatan Solano. As the girls will tell you I wrestled it away from an old guy sitting next to us. He was tossing it to me in my new Syracuse Chiefs ball cap.

20140804_D7K_4079

It was a tight game, if you consider 4 errors by the home team, it shouldn’t have been.

20140804_D7K_4082

They went through a string of relievers.

20140804_D7K_4101

It was a great game, we like going to the minor league parks to watch games. The ticket prices are cheap, the food is good and the beer is cheaper. The final score was 7-6 for the Chiefs.

Day 3: Fenway Park

We took the Green Line from Boylston Station to Fenway Station. Signs to get you from the subway station to the ballpark.

20140729_D7K_3618

Our entrance gate was on the other side of the stadium.

20140729_D7K_3619

Found our gate, but a long line-up waiting for the gates to open at 5:30PM.

20140729_D7K_3621

Despite the line-up it moved surprisingly fast.

Not sure how much they charge for the folding chair after the last row of seats.

20140729_D7K_3645

The concourse area under the seats. Beer is almost the same price as Skydome, but in US dollars, so probably more expensive.

20140729_D7K_3646

Me and my $9 draft beer at Fenway.

20140729_D7K_3659

We couldn’t see the big screen for replays easily, we would have to keep turning around. Claudia complained she was lost without it, imagine what they did at baseball games before the digital age.

20140729_D7K_3660

The Jays started the night holding the second wild card place, and still had it at the end of the night, although they didn’t pick up any ground on Baltimore who won in 12 innings.

20140729_D7K_3664

Late afternoon.

20140729_D7K_3667

Evening.

20140729_D7K_3687

There were a lot of Blue Jays fans in the stadium. The people in front of us were from Ottawa.

Bobblehead Game#3

We headed down to the Rogers Centre on August 11th for the final bobblehead game of the year. Gillian was able to get the day off work so she could join us. The TTC was shut down south of Bloor all weekend so we took the GO train into the city.

It was Brett Lawrie Bobblehead Day, the crowds seem bigger than the previous games.

Once we got in we collected our bobbleheads and went to the main Jays Shop. They have a display of Jays memorabilia including the two World Series Trophies.

It was a great day and the roof was open.

One of the rookie pitchers for the Oakland Athletics. He must have been carrying the snacks for the other bullpen pitchers in his unicorn backpack.

On the mound for Toronto was R.A. Dickey. He had a good game going 7 innings, getting out of a few jams and leaving with the score tied 3-3.

Colby Rasmus went 0-4 with a walk.

Josh Thole with a hit.

This guy brought his own Brett Lawrie cardboard cutout.

Brett Lawrie with his second stolen base. He had a good day at the plate as well going 3-5 with an RBI.

After the game we went for dinner at Xam Yu Restaurant in Chinatown. Trying to decipher the bill.

The restaurant across the street is open again under different management, it had been closed for awhile.

It was busier than it looks.

Sweet Jack Fruit. The The flavor is comparable to a combination of apple, pineapple, mango and banana.

From Spadina it was down along Dundas Street.

The AGO.

It looks like a couple of these bikes have been here for awhile.

Then we headed down University Ave back towards Union Station.

A funky sculpture in front of the Shangri-La Hotel on University Ave.

With the subway shut down there were all kinds of staff at the entrances helping people with the shuttle buses.

Wrigley Field

Wednesday was our anniversary and another great weather day. We also had tickets to the Chicago Cubs game against the St. Louis Cardinals at Wrigley Field.

The John Hancock Center.

The Weber Grill Restaurant on State Street.

We had some time in the morning so we headed for the Target store downtown.

We took the Red Line subway out to Wrigley Field. As soon as we got off there was a throng of people outside the stadium.

Inside the stadium.

Wrigley Field is the second oldest stadium in the majors, it was built in 1914 and has been home of the Cubs since 1916.

Making our way up to our seats.

We had seats in the upper deck down the right field line.

We were sitting in row one.

The grounds crew grooming the field after the 3rd inning.

We shared a bag of peanuts.

Looking over the rail during the 7th inning stretch.

Look at the seats on the roof of the buildings surrounding the stadium.

It was a good game considering the Cardinals lead the division and the Cubs are in last. The final score was 5-4 for St. Louis.

Susan and I at Wrigley.

Taking our time leaving the stadium.

Outside the stadium.

We walked around the stadium along West Waveland Avenue.

There are bleachers on almost all of the buildings.

A statue of Ron Santo, he was elected to the hall of Fame last year.

Our night view from the hotel room.

The fire escape.

Encarnacion Bobblehead Day

We headed down to Rogers Centre early on Sunday morning for the Blue Jays game against the New York Yankees. It was Edwin Encarnacion bobblehead day so the crowds were lining up early.

20130421-213428.jpg

We weren’t sure what this guy was suppose to be dressed up as, he had a crown (homemade), a cape (a blanket), a shield (out of cardboard) and blue hair.

After we got in, we looked back out and there was still a line.

20130421-214826.jpg

There are three bobblehead days this year, we have tickets to all of them.

Day 18: Bautista and Lind

One of the things I checked when we first talked about going out east and coming back through the States was the New Hampshire Fisher Cats home schedule. They are the Double A affiliate of the Toronto Blue Jays. They were starting a home stand just as we would be arriving in town. I ordered the tickets on-line back in July, just happy that we would see the stadium and the game. Here I am holding my ticket in front of the box office.

Part of the stadium opens at 5:00 pm, the seats and concessions didn’t open until 5:30 pm, so we had a 20 minute wait. The stadium is in downtown Manchester and sits on the Merrimack River, but unfortunately there is no view of the river from the stadium.

Our seats were second row behind the Fisher Cats dugout. The cost of each ticket was $12.00. Note the hotel in the background, just like in Toronto you could rent a room at the Hilton Garden Inn hotel and watch the game from your room.

As I went in search of a beer, I took a photo of the girls sitting in our seats above the dugout.

The girls looking forward to the game.

Earlier in the week I read that Jose Bautista would be doing a rehab stint in Dunedin, I mentioned to the girls that it was too bad they didn’t send him to the double A team, we could have seen him play. Well on Wednesday night, there were reports on the internet that both Jose Bautista and Adam Lind would be playing in Manchester on Thursday night. It was almost to good to be true. Once we got to the ballpark we waited for the players to come out and sure enough out trots Bautista and Lind. Here he is doing some pre-game stretches.

Lind was wearing number 14 and Bautista had on number 24.

Adam Lind looking like he is in a good mood. He played for the Fisher Casts in 2006 and was the Eastern League MVP. Notice he is wearing his Blue Jays pants with the double blue stripe.

We still couldn’t get over that Jose Bautista was playing. He led off the game for the Fisher Cats.

For the first inning there was a “bat dog”, after each player was up “Ollie” the dog would run out and pick up the bat and bring it back to the dugout.

Claudia and Angela eventually moved down a row to sit directly behind the dugout.

Notice Jose is wearing his Toronto Blue Jays batting helmet.

Half way through the game I went for some clam chowder from the Chowdah House.

Here is the starting line-ups for the game. The Rock Cats are the Double A affiliate of the Minnesota Twins.

We were trailing 4-0 early on, but in the fourth inning, with one run in and the bases loaded, Jose came up to bat.

The next six photos show Jose swinging and then watching his shot go off of the hotel. His grand slam put the Fisher Cats up 5-4.

In the fifth inning with the game tied 5-5, the Fisher Cats went back to back to back with solo home runs. Here is Brad Glenn crossing the plate.

Followed by Ryan Goins.

And finally Ryan Schimpf.

Jose looking for the camera.

Adam Lind walking back after one of his 3 strikeouts.

The catcher was coming back to the dugout after a third out strikeout, I waved to him for the ball, as he got close he tossed it up to me. I think it was my Fisher Cat ball cap that I had just purchased that helped. Here is Claudia with the ball.

Here is the catcher Brian Jeroloman who tossed me the ball.

Bautista didn’t have much action in right field for most of the game.

In the eighth inning, Bautista went deep again to make the score 9-6.

The announced crowd was 5,385.

After the game there was a fireworks show.

It was quite good, better than I had expected.

The final box score for the game. It was a great game and we all enjoyed ourselves.

MEC and Christie Pits

Today we headed down to Mountain Equipment Co-op. Here are Angela and Claudia on King Street. Gillian stayed home to study for her physics test tomorrow.

The MEC store on King Street.

The corner of King and Blue Jays Way.

From MEC we headed up to Christie Pits to watch the Toronto Maple Leafs Inter-County Baseball League game. They were playing the Burlington Twins. They almost picked off this guy at second.

Here he is shaking the dirt out of his uniform.

It was a good game, but it was a hot day. This was the second last home game of the season.

The centre fielder, Raul Borjas.

Here is one of the Maple Leafs getting caught in a rundown.

This bird landed a few feet away from me. Shortly after a foul ball came my way.

When we left at the bottom of the 7th inning, the Maple Leafs were up 3-1. The final score was 5-4 Toronto.

A final shot from left field, the guys on the field are the bullpen. It turns out the GM of the Burlington Twins is an old high school gym teacher, Doug Kelcher. The Twins use to be the Mississauga Twins, they played in Meadowvale for a couple of seasons before moving to Burlington.

The girls in their TML baseball hats, the hats were free with the purchase of a raffle ticket. For $2 we each got a New Era baseball hat, not a bad deal.

Jays Game

We headed down to the Blue Jays game on Sunday. It was Brandon Morrow Bobblehead Day against the New York Mets. The crowds weren’t as busy as last year when it was Robbie Alomar Day.

This guy had a baseball hat on, no really it was a baseball hat, his sister had Mickey Mouse ears with a baseball theme.

It was a great day and the roof was open. Our seats were in the fourth row in the 500 level and it just so happened that the bank of lights shielded us from the sun all afternoon.

We met Carolyn, Danny, Alex and Emi at the game, they had bought the tickets next to us.

It was a good game.

Encarnacion went 0-5 with 2 strikeouts.

Jose Bautista hitting his 11th home run of the season.

Can you see Claudia on the big screen?

Unfortunately the Jays came up short and lost 6-5, the attendance was 41, 857, the bobble heads were given out to the first 20,000.

Elvis outside the stadium.

The final box score.

Toronto Maple Leafs Baseball

Claudia and I headed down to Christie Pits to see the Toronto Maple Leafs season opener.

It was a great day weather wise for baseball at Dominico Field.

They were playing the Ottawa Fat Cats.

The price is right, there is no cost, the programs are also free. The hotdogs are a reasonable $3 and there is a 50/50 draw for some good prizes.

Claudia enjoying the game.

There was a lot of action, especially on the base paths.

The great thing is being able to walk right up to the fence and watch or planting yourself on the grass up the hill.

Toronto won the game 6-4.

Robbie Alomar Day!

We headed down to the Rogers Centre early in order to be one of the first 20,000 to get our Roberto Alomar Bobblehead. We took the subway down and arrived at 10:40, the gates didn’t open until 11:00. The lines were already snaking around by the time we got there, in our line alone there had to be a few hundred people ahead of us. Once they open the gates, the line moved quickly, but the way they gave out the bobbleheads was a little chaotic, no real order to it, it would have been easy for people to collect more than one.

The coveted Roberto Alomar Bobblehead, this one is not worth as much as it is out of the box and no longer MIP (Mint in Package). A quick look on Kijiji and Craigslist have them listed for anywhere from $50-100. Even when we were leaving we saw some people offering to buy a bobblehead on the street.

When we left Mississauga it was cloudy and overcast, the forecast was still calling for 60% chance of showers, when we got down there the roof was closed. The Jays were taking batting practice.

Jose Bautista taking a few warm-up swings before getting in the cage.

Next thing we knew they started opening the roof. Not often you get to see it actually open or close while you’re sitting in it.

Some video of the roof starting to open.

We were sitting in the 500 level in Section 525R, row 16, seats 6-10. They are almost right behind home plate with a great view of the field. Unfortunately after the past couple of weeks they have stopped showing replays on the Jumbotron, there were a few close plays that the umpires have blown the calls, so now there is no replays at any of the stadiums.

The roof is almost fully open and we are now sitting in the sun.

The last panel rotating around to the far side.

Prior to the game there were some pre-game ceremonies to honour Robbie Alomar. They played the Journey to Cooperstown on the big screen.

There were some former teammates among the special guests.

Roberto Alomar entered the stadium walking down one of the aisles among the fans, he is the guy in front of the Mountie wearing the suit.

Robbie shaking hands with from L-R, Kelly Gruber, Duane Ward, Devon White, John MacDonald and Paul Beeston.

The MC was Jerry Howarth.

John MacDonald (current Jay) saying a few words, they were teammates in Cleveland when he was starting out. Cito Gaston in the background.

There were a number of video tributes to Robbie.

Robbie with his mother and father thanking the fans.

They had a big number 12 on the field covering second base.

They had special second bases for the game, they had the number 12 on the actual base.

Aaron Hill

Everyone heading off the field.

On with the game, it was a later start due to the pre-game festivities. On the mound for the Jays was Brandon Morrow.

Jose Bautista watching a ball.

Jose walked and Edwin Encarnacion hit a two run home run to follow, the Jays jump out to an early 2-0 lead.

The wave.

The newest Jay Colby Rasmus was o’fer coming into the game, he broke out with a single and a 2-run double to go 2-4 and now sits with a 0.125 average since coming over from St. Louis.

The first pitcher in relief for the Texas Rangers was Yoshinori Tateyama. A couple of innings later he was followed by Koji Uehara.

It was a good game, the Jays scored runs in each of the first four innings, Brandon Morrow had 11 stikeouts and had a one hitter going through five innings.

The final boxscore for the game. It was a sellout attendance. The people that sat down on either side of us didn’t get a bobblehead. The one family arrived at 11:50 AM and there were none left.
