Onigiri Rice Ball

I bought some rice balls at J-Town. This was the plum version.

20160329-D7K_0329

You open it up and the nori and it is separated from the rice.

20160329-D7K_0330

If you pull down on a strip it open right up and you can fold the rice ball into it.

20160329-D7K_0331

It has a little bit of plum, but it could use more. Each one cost $1.50.

Sourest Food Challenge: Umeboshi

Found this video on YouTube of two guys eating a umeboshi for the first time. I laugh everytime I watch it.

Happy New Year!

Happy New Year to all of our family and friends. 2016 will bring another busy year to our family. We headed into Scarborough for the day at G-ma’s and G-pa’s. The day included a game of Rumoli, it started with Claudia, Alex, Auntie Carolyn, Angela and Dylan. Eventually Dylan ran out of chips and Gillian started playing, here she is after a few hands of winning.

Princess Mononoke

We headed downtown today to the TIFF Bell Lightbox located at Reitman Square on the north-west corner of King and John Streets. Since December they have been showing films from Studio Ghibli. Princess Mononoke is one of the few films of Hayao Miyazaki that we have not seen.

We took advantage of the extended family day pass for the TTC over the holiday break. For $11.00 we can all tavel on the TTC. With the weather so cold today it came in handy as we did the subway and streetcars. Here are the girls on the subway on our way downtown.

The girls with Totoro.

Afterwards we headed up to Dundas Street and the Japanese Noodle House Kenzo Ramen for an early dinner.

Sushi Girl

Claudia has been determined to try her hand at making sushi. Finally today she sat down and washed the rice (5 times as all the recipes stated), cooked it and mixed up the ingredients. She used crab meat and takuan for the centres, we didn’t have any cucumber. Her first one was a little big, but she got the hang of it and we had it for dinner. She did a great job. Here she is with her finished plate of sushi.

Happy New Year!

We headed out to G-Ma and G-pa’s in Scarborough on New Year’s Day. With the snow we received since Boxing Day it made for good tobogganing conditions.

Gillian and Angela having a little trouble.

Tim and Stella joined us, along with Alex and Emi. Here are Stella and Emi coming down.

Of course what does down, must come up.

Angela and Gillian making it further down the hill, not sure if I caught Gillian blinking or if she had her eyes closed all the way down.

Tim giving Stella and Emi a little push.

Rainwater Ribfest Part 2

Canada Day we held our 2nd Annual Rainwater Ribfest with the Skjold-Pettersen’s. Here is Lars finishing off the first course chicken wings.

Second course was the ribs.

Lars sinking further into his chair. Having polished off the chicken wings, ribs, Susan’s pulled pork, burgers made with ground beef and italian sausage, bbq shrimps and potato salad we were all stuffed and moving slow.

The girls still taking advantage of the swings.

Lily after a busy day with Loki, Chloe and Milo.

Rainwater Ribfest

On Sunday we got together with our neighbours for our first annual Rainwater Ribfest. Lars did up some smoked ribs and chicken in an electric smoker. We had tried it out a couple of weeks ago and we planned on the long weekend. Susan made some pulled pork in the crock pot.

So much food!

We also had potatoes, corn, and chicken wings.

More food!

And still more food!

The girls digging in.

Dig in!

Lars looking content. We all ate probably a little more then we should have, but it was delicious.

Lars "Mandarin full"

The girls occupied with their technology.

The girls

Angela and Gillian braiding Madyson’s hair after dinner. We followed up with brownies and cheesecake and ice cream. It was a great evening with our neighbours. Claudia said it’s kind of funny that we called it “Rainwater” Ribfest when it was only our two families, to which I replied “we are Rainwater!”.
