Roadtrip to Asheville, NC

Word came while we were in Ottawa that Emi’s husband Alan F. Flynn Jr. passed away on August 30, 2017. Mom and Dad wanted to go to the funeral service for Al, so Carolyn and I drove them down via John and Reiko’s in Reston, VA (outside Washington, DC). Mo flew in from Vancouver to Reiko’s only to realize later from his daughter that it was another 8 hour drive to Asheville, NC.

We left Saturday morning and drove to Reiko’s and then left from there Sunday morning for Asheville. That night Emi took us out for dinner at Travina Italian Kitchen.

The waiter took a picture for us.

The service was Labour Day Monday. It was held at St Giles Chapel which is on the grounds of the Deerfield Episcopal Retirement Community. Before the service Mo, Alan, Reiko and John.

After the service, Emi took us out for lunch to 131 Main. Here are Dad, Sarah, her son Koji and Mom. They had to leave early, Sarah to get back to San Jose and Koji to George Washington University in DC.

On Tuesday morning we started the drive back to John and Reiko’s in Reston, VA. We stopped at the scenic outlook in Tennessee just across the North Carolina border.

Reston, VA

After we got back to John and Reiko’s, Mom and Dad took us all out for Chinese food dinner. We went to X.O. Taste in Arlington, VA. It was close to Jamie and Sean and their families. This is Cormac (Sean’s youngest), he is just over a year, my first cousin twice removed.

There were some phone issues between Mo and Reiko, but eventually they were sorted out and now they were taking the next step with FaceTime.

One last photo before we hit the road to come home home.

It was a long drive, over 3100km and 4 long days in the car through New York, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia, Tennessee and North Carolina.

Happy Birthday Mom!

Shanna and Jesse came in for a visit, they arrived on the 9th and are here until the 21st. The first weekend we headed into Scarborough for some lobster dinner.

Celebrating Mom and Dad’s (belated) 60th Wedding Anniversary

Although their actual anniversary was on June 30th, they were in BC on holidays with Shanna. We didn’t get a chance to celebrate since they returned. Today we all got together at the Dragon Pearl Buffet. We were all able to make it, except for Melissa and Fernando and of course Shanna, David and Jesse. Here is Bear enjoying his dinner, it was Bear’s 1st birthday today.

Dunn’s River Falls

On Tuesday we did the Dunn’s River Falls excursion. This one was close to the resort, only about 10 minutes away. We had to wait at the top for more people in our group.

The climb up the falls starts on the beach.

20160510-P1030044

There is another excursion that takes you on a catamaran from the resort beach to the falls and then back again after you climb the falls. Brad and Chelsea and some of their friends did this later in the week.

20160510-P1030046

In some places everyone holds hands to form a human chain as you move up the falls. Our guide said he doesn’t like that all the way up, so there were only certain spots where we held on to the next person.

Here is everyone from our group, Susan, Lori, Dale, Carolyn, Mom and Sue and Dave.

Each group is assigned a group videographer who takes video/photos of the group all the way up. At the end they try and get you to buy the DVD.
