Curling Final 2….postponed

Today was Angela’s Junior Mixed Curling “scheduled” finals, the game has been postponed until after the March Break. The school they were suppose to play was not allowed to play today due to an athletic ban on their school.

On Monday there was a senior boys tier 1 ROPSSAA hockey final between Mount Carmel and St Michael from Bolton. The Mount Carmel team won 6-1, but not before 4 St Michael players were ejected in the third period due to an incident with the ref (or zamboni driver…details from the girls are sketchy at this point). The St Michael fans were unruly using f-bombs and other disrespectful actions.

As a result Angela’s team put in some practice and eventually watched the Mt Carmel Junior Girls win their finals and the Junior Boys lose theirs.

Angela and some of her teammates taking a break. It’s too bad they didn’t get to play today, it will be even worse if the athletic ban is upheld and they win by default.

The story doesn’t end there, it also affects Gillian and her teammates, as you recall Mount Carmel played St Michael yesterday in the Senior Girls finals. Because of the athletic ban, they would be ineligible to compete at OFSAA the week after March Break. Since the deadline for team entry is Thursday at midnight, there is a chance that Gillian’s team will be going to Ottawa to represent the Region of Peel. From what I gathered from the coaches today, a decision will be made by tomorrow morning.

Curling Final 1

Today was Gillian’s senior girls curling finals against St Michael from Bolton at the Brampton Curling Club. Unfortunately they came out on the wrong end of a 10-5 final. They were up 2-1 after the second end but after they scored 3 in the third end, the other team stole 4 in the fourth to put the game out of reach. Here are Gillian and Amanda waiting for a measurement on the ice.

The girls had a hard time reading the ice early on. They just weren’t catching any breaks.

A time out after the fourth end.

They ran out of rocks in the eighth end. It was a good season for them as they all graduate this year.

Their coaches are dedicated and put in a lot of time and effort for all the kids.

Two More Sleeps…

Only a couple of more days, where has the time gone. We have had our tree up for three weeks, we had cut it down back on December 2 after the Family Bonspiel. Here is a picture of the tree waiting to be tied down to the car. We bought it at Agrams and had it freshly cut down (from the rafters).

It turned out to be a good tree, there were a lot of trees hanging that day and it was hard to spin them around.

Susan and the girls did their usual good job of decorating the tree.

Here is Gillian and Chloe before she headed off to work today. She got a lot of hours this weekend, tomorrow morning I’m dropping her off on my way to work as she starts at 6:00 am.

Santa Chloe’s helper…Chloe Elf.

I borrowed a 10-20mm wide angle lens from one of the guys at work. This is the type of lens they use for real estate photos. Makes the rooms look a little bigger.

Curling Tournament

Today Gillian was competing in the Zones Qualifier of the Gore Insurance Provincial Championships. It is the longest running High School competition in the Province. The tournament took place at the High Park Curling Club. I was able to head down after Claudia’s concert to catch Gillian’s second game.

Gillian’s team won their first game, lost the second (the one I watched), but were able to win their third game. They finished in the top two of their Zone and have qualified for the Regionals. They will be held in Peterborough in February. Well done to Gillian and her teammates.

Decisions Ahead…

Congratulations to Gillian on her early acceptance offers from the University of Ottawa and University of Waterloo for their Biomedical Science programs. She has also applied to McMaster University and the University of Guelph. She is very excited and Susan and I are very proud of her.

Happy Birthday Gillian!

For the second time in 11 years I was away for Gillian’s birthday. We are now even for missed birthdays, Gillian has missed a couple of my birthdays for school trips and Guides. I was back in Newfoundland this week. There was still cake and photos, just have to get a copy to post.

WLU/UWO

Susan and Gillian went out to Wilfrid Laurier University on Friday to visit the WLU Open House. Then on Saturday, we went to the University of Waterloo Open House to see their Science programs. She has her OUAC number now so she can start the application process. She thinks she has her top three figured out. In a couple of weeks we’ll go to the University of Guelph for their Science information session.

uOttawa

Susan and I took Gillian to Ottawa on Friday for the uOttawa Day. It was an opportunity to hear about their Science programs, tour the residences and campus. We drove up Thursday night and came back Saturday morning. We enjoyed an extra day of sun and 22°C that went through Mississauga on Thursday.

The University of Ottawa campus is right downtown, next to the Rideau Canal and only a few minutes walk from Parliament Hill.

After a busy day on campus, we headed over to Parliment Hill for a walk.

Chateau Frontenac.

Angela and Claudia stayed home and Grandma Swan came down for a couple of nights.

Heading towards the ByWard Market for dinner.

We ended up at the Heart and Crown for dinner.

Next week it is Wilfrid Laurier University and University of Waterloo.

Congratulations Gillian!

Friday night was the Mt Carmel Academic Awards evening. Normally it is held at the Church, but due to the construction/renovations, it was held in the school gym. Gillian received her award for honours. Look closely and you’ll see her going up for her award.

Afterwards it was off to Starbucks for a celebratory drink. Waiting for the train on Tenth Line.

Congratulations Gillian!

I took Gillian down to the Drive Test centre in Oakville this afternoon for her G2 (G1 exit) road test. She didn’t seem to be gone that long and before I knew it, she was standing next to me, telling me she passed. Well done Gillian, with great power comes great responsibility. Here she is in 1996 getting an early start behind the wheel.
