Santa Fe

I was down in Santa Fe, New Mexico this week for meetings.

nm_17960

I left on Halloween and had a challenging time trying to get there. My original flight out of Toronto on American Airlines was cancelled due to mechanical problems. I was able re-book on the noon flight to Dallas and got the last seat on the connection to Santa Fe, although the connection was tight. I was traveling with three colleagues, who ended up having to go through Albuquerque. In the end I made my connection, although their system said I was still in Toronto, and even though I was standing there with a ticket, they were reluctant to let me board.

Santa Fe is the oldest and highest state capital in the USA.

I stayed at the La Fonda on the Plaza Hotel, it sits on the location of various inns since 1609. The current hotel was built in 1922. It sits at the end of the Old Santa Fe Trail.

Just down the street is the Loretto Chapel. It is a former Roman Catholic Church that is now a privately owned museum. It is known for its unusual helix shaped spiral staircase.

20161102-p1030536

When the church was built there was no staircase to the choir loft and the nuns had to use a ladder. The story goes:

“The nuns prayed for St. Joseph’s intercession for nine straight days. On the day after their novena ended a shabby-looking stranger appeared at their door. He told the nuns he would build them a staircase but that he needed total privacy and locked himself in the chapel for three months. He used a small number of primitive tools including a square, a saw and some warm water and constructed a spiral staircase entirely of non-native wood. The identity of the carpenter is not known for as soon as the staircase was finally finished he was gone. Many witnesses, upon seeing the staircase, feel it was constructed by St. Joseph himself, as a miraculous occurrence.”

Down the road from the hotel was the Cathedral Basilica of St. Francis of Assisi. It is the mother church of the Archdiocese of Santa Fe.

The oldest church structure in the US is in Santa Fe. It is the San Miguel Mission. It was built between 1610-1626. Mass is offered at the church every Sunday.

There are a lot of shops and art galleries. Santa Fe ranks third in art sales behind New York and LA. There is a street called Canyon Road that has over 100 art galleries.

In Santa Fe there is a car service called Bolt Ride. The cars are the Tesla Model S. It is pretty cool. We used it to get to the airport on Friday.

20161104-p1030634

The car was driving it itself, and if the driver made a signal change, the car would change lanes on its own.

20161104-p1030635

Our flight out of Santa Fe was delayed 40 minutes, but it was better than the flight before us. Their plane is the one in the picture, the flight out of Dallas had to turn back for a cockpit issue, then once it landed the same problem occurred, so they were trying to repair it. Our plane came in and we departed before theirs. They were close to a 3 hour delay.

20161104-p1030640

The Santa Fe airport is pretty small.

20161104-p1030645

The Dallas to Toronto leg was on time and only half full. Although there was an airfield lighting issue at Pearson, we didn’t experience any delays.

Lighthouses Visited On This Trip

While it wasn’t planned, the theme of our trip to PEI turned into lighthouse visits. I started mapping the locations of the lighthouses and it became clear that we needed to visit the south east part of the island to fill in the gaps. Below is the map of all of the lighthouses we visited. In total we visited 17 lighthouses.

The lighthouse-openwere ones that were open and we were able to climb to the top. Thelighthouse-4 were the other lighthouses visited.

Day 4: Cape Cod

Today we were heading to Cape Cod for the beaches. It was a travel day with only one planned stop along the way. We stopped at a K-Mart along the way for some beach toys. Both Angela and I had an Elvis sighting while we were in the store. It wasn’t until dinner that I asked if anyone else saw Elvis and Angela described the same guy.

Claudia wanted to stop at Walhburgers in Hingham, MA. This is the restaurant in the reality tv show on A&E by the same name. It is owned by Donnie, Mark and Paul Walhberg. They have either table or counter service, we opted for the faster counter service.

We’ll be spending a few days in Wellfleet, MA while we are on the Cape. After dinner we headed to Duck Harbor Beach.

It was a great start to our Cape Cod stay. Tomorrow we off to the Cape Cod National Seashore. Our drive today from Waltham (A) to Hingham (A) to Wellfleet (C).

Buffalo Narrows

I had one last trip before some holidays this summer. I was back out to Saskatoon and then onwards to Meadow Lake, Pinehouse and Buffalo Narrows. It was a successful trip.

There was lots of black bears, deer and Sandhill cranes along the roads. In Buffalo Narrows there is a colony of White Pelicans. On both days we saw a doe with two baby deer in tow. This is a photo of one of them.

Island Falls, SK

This past week had me up in northern Saskatchewan for work. I was doing an installation at our Island Falls, SK site with two other guys. The site is located at the Island Falls hydroelectric power generating station. This is the view from A-dam.

Most of the ice is off of the Churchill River.

There was a groundhog (Marmota monad) that kept showing up at the same time of the day near our building, makes me wonder if one of the operators feed it.

Making a run for it.

The copper smelter was closed in June 2010.

Before heading to the airport we stopped at the local tourist park with the statue of Josiah Flintabbatey Flonatin, a science fiction character from the novel “The Sunless City” by J.E.  Preston Muddock.

Flinty is 24 ft tall and was constructed in 1962. It was designed by cartoonist Al Capp.

To get to Island Falls, it is either an 8 hour drive from Saskatoon or a 1 hour flight from Winnipeg to Flin Flon and then another 3.5 hour drive from there.  Here is the flight path from Winnipeg to Flin Flon. Calm Air is the only airline going there now that Bearskin Airlines no longer has daily flights. While we were waiting to board our flight a RCMP jet came in with a prisoner to make a court appearance in Flin Flon. The provincial court sheriffs were there to take custody of the prisoner. When they are arrested they are shipped to Prince Albert to await trial and then flown back to the local community.

Sleeping Giant

I was up in the Geraldton area for a few days. It should be the last time for awhile as I have turned the site over to one of my junior techs. I always stop in at the Terry Fox Memorial whenever I go up.

The Sleeping Giant.

There was still a lot of ice on the lakes, but the snow was gone. A map of the flight path from Toronto to Thunder Bay. Geraldton is another 3.5 hour drive north-east of Thunder Bay.

Rattray Marsh Clean-up

We went down to the Rattray Marsh to volunteer for the annual clean-up. Claudia’s Pathfinder group always helps. There was a lot of fog on Lake Ontario.

The marsh.

there was still some ice hanging around.

Claudia trying to skip stones with her bum arm. Couldn’t remember if she can skip stones with a good arm.

Any chance for Claudia to get in the water she takes it.

Chloe looking pretty shaggy.

Giant Pyrogy

I was out to Edmonton the last week of January and headed to Flat Valley, SK for a couple of days. On the way back to Edmonton, we stopped in Glendon, AB to see the big pyrogy statue.

In the middle of town is the giant pyrogy on a fork statue.

It is located on Pyrogy Drive.

Unfortunately the restaurant was closed until the end of February.

Happy New Years! From the Big House

It was an early start on New Years Day morning, I picked up Stam at 5:00 am and we headed off to Ann Arbor, Michigan for the Winter Classic at The Big House.

The drive took us 5.5 hours, Google says it takes 4.5 hours, so we made pretty good time given the weather conditions. We crossed the border at Sarnia and the weather was good up until Livonia when the snow started coming down. I prepaid for a parking spot in one of the downtown parking garages, it cost $10.25. The lot was about 1 mile from the stadium.

Approaching the Big House, home of the University of Michigan Wolverines.

They had a Spectator Plaza beside the stadium, with food, beer, games, and live entertainment.

Me out front of the stadium, the snow kept falling.

Taking our seats before the game, we were in section 30, row 91 in the northwest corner of the stadium.

The guys on skates shovelling the snow, they had a busy night ahead.

You can see the division between blue on the left and red on the right.

The pre-game warm up skate.

The stadium at near capacity, the announced attendance was 105,491, a new record for watching a hockey game.

The American national anthem sung by the Zac Brown Band. The Canadian anthem was sung by the Tenors (Who?)

Stam and I in the Big House. For another photo of us in the Big House see this photo (we’re in the blue circle).

Where’s “no-shirt” Waldo in the crowd? One of the two guys sitting near us that took their shirts off in the cold. The game time temperature was -10 deg C.

The announcement that the Maple Leafs second goal was good.

Tyler Bozak’s winning shootout goal.

The final score Leafs 3, Detroit 2!

Despite the 100,000 plus people it didn’t take long to get out of the stadium.

The throngs of happy and disappointed fans filling Main St for the walk back to their vehicles.

We had dinner in Ann Arbor before heading to our hotel in Livonia, but the traffic was still bad when we finished. It was the snowy conditions and icy roads that made it worse, we passed numerous cars that had gone into ditches. The usual 30 minute drive turned into 2 hours.

We left the hotel the next morning at 8:00 am and headed for home, after dropping Stam off at home, I was home by 2:00pm. When we arrived at the border, the lady asked how long we had been away. I told her we were at the hockey game and she said “you were one of the smart ones”, although she did say they had extra staff for the night because they were expecting a big rush after the game, but it never came. When we checked in there were three families ahead of us who had checked out that morning, planning to drive back to Burlington after the game, but were trying to check back in because of the weather.

Like the Leafs thank you e-mail said “you made the journey, you braved the elements, you were a part of the largest attended game in NHL history”. Stam and I had a great time and may try and plan for a road trip to Philadelphia to see his NFL Eagles play next year.
