A Fun Weekend

It was the girls final day in Wisconsin. They had an afternoon flight from Madison to Toronto/Ottawa via Chicago. We went into Mount Horeb and visited the Driftless Historium, it is a museum of the Mount Horeb area.

We walked around town.

Only in Mount Horeb would you see a horse tied up outside a coffeeshop.

The girls with one of the trolls. Mount Horeb is the Troll Capital of the World.

Angela still had one more item on her Wisconsin farm bucket list. She got to try the zero-turn lawn mower.

I dropped them off at the Madison airport. They had an adventure getting home with delays due to thunderstorms in Chicago, Gillian had a tight connection, but in the end everyone made it back safely. It was nice to have them all here for Thanksgiving.

My Name is Chloe

Claudia posted a video she made of Chloe on her YouTube channel.

Testing Giant Jenga

We finished making our giant Jenga. Claudia and I tested it out tonight, in the end I lost but didn’t lose any toes.

A video of Claudia successfully making her move.

Susan said she could hear the crash from inside.

Happy Birthday Mom!

Shanna and Jesse came in for a visit, they arrived on the 9th and are here until the 21st. The first weekend we headed into Scarborough for some lobster dinner.

Christmas Day 2016!

The first one up was the dog, at 7:00AM she was ready to get up. It gave me some time to take some early photos of the tree and presents.

The girls made their way down around 8:00ish.

Chloe was right into opening presents this year.

A throwback to when they were younger and would get the same clothes.

We headed to Lori and Dale’s for dinner in the afternoon. Here are Angela and Gillian playing with one of Lily’s toys.

Chloe was good, she mostly ignored Todd and Marley.

Brad and Melissa got the kids the game Pie Face!. Here is the one time Kaiden played, after getting pied once, he had had enough.

Lily anticipating the pie.

Here it comes.

She was loving the game, especially when others got pied. She knew what was coming.

They had a great time playing the game.

Rattlesnake Point

I like how the morning sun catches some of the birds that visit the feeder.

Today Susan, Gillian, Chloe and I went on a hike at Rattlesnake Point Conservation Area. The weather was perfect, not too hot.

20160717-D7K_2252

There is a lot of rock climbers that frequent it.

20160717-D7K_2259

The last time we were here was in 2011, the girls and I had come on a PA Day. Chloe didn’t like the grated steps back then, and she didn’t like them going up or down. Here is a video of her going back up the stairs. At least this time she went on her own, last time we ended up carrying her up and down.

Happy Canada Day 2016!

We headed out to the JC Community Picnic on Canada Day for the 39th annual picnic at Caledon Place. Even though the forecasted weather was iffy we aren’t fair-weather picnickers. We arrived around 9:45 in the morning, the rain started on our drive up, but had stopped by the time we unpacked the car. As usual Mark brought his dining tent and a large tarp just in case the rain came again.

20160701-D7K_2008

There were lots of picnic tables to be had.

IMG_20160701_101121

It was pretty quiet early on as you can see by the amount of vehicles parked in the background.

20160701-D7K_2009

By the time everyone arrived, it was almost lunch time.

20160701-D7K_2010

20160701-D7K_2012

There were 14 of us this year, seems the threat of rain kept some of us away.

20160701-D7K_2013

After lunch it was time for the races.

20160701-D7K_2016

As you can see the skies cleared although it was a little windy at times.

20160701-D7K_2017

Angela and Claudia  and Darin and Eoin ready for the 16-40 3-legged race.

20160701-D7K_2019

Off and running.

20160701-D7K_2022

Angela and Claudia came in 3rd place, while Darin and Eoin ended up breaking their tie.

20160701-D7K_2025

Next up was the 41+ 3-legged race. Sansei Mark had his own cheering section from some of his students.

20160701-D7K_2029

Carey and I had a slow start.

20160701-D7K_2032

In the end we finished 4th or 5th, Mark and Gaila finished 3rd.

20160701-D7K_2034

There were only 2 teams in the 7-15 geta race.

20160701-D7K_2039

The girls and Dylan were up for the 16+ geta race.

20160701-D7K_2040

20160701-D7K_2041

In the first heat they had competition from Mark, Darin, Orla and Eoin.

20160701-D7K_2043

The girls and Dylan finished 2nd in their heat and moved on to the finals.

20160701-D7K_2049

They didn’t fare as well in the finals.

20160701-D7K_2052

There seemed to be some sort of breakdown.

20160701-D7K_2054

We were trying to figure out how long the geta skis were, Julie offered to lay down next to one, but we thought standing next to them would be easier. Julie is 5 ft and Dylan is over 6ft.

20160701-D7K_2075

Time for the Saikoro game.

I don’t think any of us were in the final group.

It was onto Bingo!

20160701-D7K_2084

Here is Claudia waiting for her bingo to be checked.

20160701-D7K_2085

Carey was one of the big bingo winners. He won one of the special games and here he is sitting on one of his two Canada chairs.

20160701-D7K_2086

It was a pretty successful bingo for the Tanabe-Uyeda’s, of the 15 regular games we won 6 bingos and Carey’s special game.

20160701-D7K_2087

After dinner they did the Fukubiki draws back at the Bingo Pavillon. Once again the Tanabe-Uyeda’s did well. Of the 34 prizes we won a combined 7 in total (21%). We won 3 including a pair of pearl earrings from Kobo Jewellery. Gaila won 3 prizes including a can of Shoyu and Julie won a prize.

20160701-D7K_2088

Here are the table of prize winners. Unfortunately none of us won the Share the Wealth draw this year. The top prize was $125. It was a great day and we had a good time, good food and good laughs.

Rain Poncho Test

We went to Ikea after church this morning and one of the things we picked up were rain ponchos for Angela and Claudia. They need one for their trip to Germany, something to keep their knapsacks dry. When we got home we tested them out and they passed the test.

An update on the backyard bird feeder, one night this past week a couple of racoons were fighting over it and knocked it to the ground. After refilling it and hanging it up again, it lasted a day until some squirrels decided they would take their turn at it. They broke the handle off and chewed the cap to get the lid off. Undeterred, I fixed it up with some new wire, tape and a hashi.

20160611-D7K_1707

The birds are back, we even had a Blue Jay munching away at the seeds that were on the ground.

Day 9: Chelton Beach, Sold Out Lobster and Ceilidh

redToday we ventured out to Chelton Beach Provincial Park. It is located out past the Confederation Bridge on the south side of the island.

The Seacow Head lighthouse, named for the walrus that use to frequent the waters, was built in 1864. It is one of the oldest lighthouses on the island. It is octagonal shape and was automated in 1959.

Next it was on to Chelton Beach Provincial Park, we arrived just after high tide, so the girls played on the playground for awhile. Here they are enjoying the “recommended for 5-12 years old” play structure.

We visited this beach when we were here in 2012, but we came at low tide, by the time we left, it had gone down quite a bit.

On the way back to the cottage we stopped in Victoria at the seafood store to buy some lobsters for dinner, it was around 3:30pm and they were sold out?? We only came out with a 2lb bag of mussels. Instead we ordered take-out Chinese food in Cornwall.

After dinner we went to a Ceilidh (pronounced kay-lee) in nearby Afton at the Community Centre.

The place was already busy when we got there and the majority of the audience had grey or white hair.

The performers were Alan Betts, Clive Currie, Darlene Bradley, and Wade Murray. The special guests were the step dancing Dalziel sisters who were suppose to be accompanied by a fiddler, but he couldn’t make it. Clive Currie played the fiddle for a couple of songs.

Here is a video of his fiddle playing.

They sang some traditional maritime music, some covers, and some original songs. Here they are singing Heave Away.

Day 4: Sea Glass History and Singing Sands

pecToday we headed up to Souris which is up on the east tip of the island. This is the port of Souris.

The Souris Lighthouse, it was built in 1880. The last light keeper retired in 1991.

Inside the lighthouse is a museum of sea glass. There is sea glass and sand from all over the world.

They also have examples of where the different colours of sea glass may have originated from.

After the beach we drove to East Point, it is the eastern tip of the island.
