Fort Smith, NT

I was up to Wood Buffalo National Park in the Northwest Territories in September. The weather was good, only towards the end of the week did it dip below zero overnight. The first night it was clear and we were able to see some of the aurora borealis.

Not as much wildlife this trip. Only a few bears.

Saw the same bison going to and from the site each day.

Grosbeak Lake. Didn’t have much time, we went after we finished work the last day, and with the days getting shorter, we didn’t get to go all the way out.

Parks Canada was renovating the paths at the Salt Plains Area, so it was closed off. There was still some of the salt flats at Grosbeak.

Racoons, Possums, and Skunks

We had them all in our backyard this past week. The racoons and possum use the fences as their highway. Angela saw four raccoons and a possum on the fence together. One morning when I was heading to work, I saw the raccoon posse over on the next street.

On Monday night, Chloe got hit by a skunk in the backyard, it wasn’t a direct ht, so that was good. We are getting better at it, we had everyone concocting the mixture, and we contained Chloe to the back deck. I changed my clothes, put gloves on and scrubbed her down outside. The girls rounded up the air freshers for inside the house and none of us smelled like skunk the next day.

On Thursday morning, I let Chloe out and there was the possum on the back fence, once it cleared our yard it just froze on the fence and didn’t move. This was the best I could get for a picture.

Bear Country

After arriving home at 3:30am on Sunday morning from Jamaica, I was back at the airport on Monday morning heading to Fort Smith, NWT, spending the week at Wood Buffalo National Park. The first day on the way to the site we saw 12 black bears (Ursus americanus).

The one bear was grazing at the side of the road and when the truck stopped it came a little closer and sat down and watched us.

20160517-D7K_1263

We only saw one bison the whole day.

20160517-D7K_1265

When we arrived at the site a bear came wandering into the clearing.

It spent a couple of hours grazing around the site.

20160517-D7K_1283

We saw about 4 bears on the way back to town.

20160517-D7K_1290

One evening we headed down to the Rapids of the Drown to see the American White Pelicans (Pelecanus erythrorhynchos).

It was a good week in Fort Smith, even got some work done. My colleague and I both had our luggage bumped on the flight from Edmonton to Fort Smith on the Monday. The plane was 200 lb over its weight. After they took our names and numbers, I asked if there was any compensation for us, since we didn’t have our bags. The girl came back out with $40 cash each. It bought our beer. Our bags didn’t end up coming until Tuesday afternoon. Looking into the cockpit on the return flight to Edmonton.

Saturna Island

Work had me out to British Columbia this past week. A colleague and I had to get some of the equipment back up and running after some recent problems. We lucked out with the weather, there was some rain when we were crossing on the ferry Monday and a little bit early Tuesday morning, but the rest of the week was mostly sunny.

20160314-D7K_0010

Shanna had some time off and was planning to go to Abbotsford, so when she heard I was coming, she planned her route via Saturna Island. It was good to see her.

This is the Four Winds B&B that we were staying at, it sits right on the water.

20160316-D7K_0082

Before we headed to dinner on Wednesday we took in East Point. The island in the middle of the photo is a hangout for sea lions, seals, and bald eagles. It is about 200m offshore. This is an old fog alarm building.

Leaving Saturna Island behind, the last time I was there was 4 years ago, hopefully it isn’t as long until the next trip.

20160317-D7K_0302

We had to transfer at Mayne Island.

20160317-D7K_0311

We got back to Vancouver Island and had dinner in Sidney at Shabai Thai, it was delicious. Shanna stayed with me in Sidney before catching an early ferry back to the main land Friday morning. I had an early flight back to Toronto.

Northern Saskatchewan and NWT Trip

I had an extended trip out west, a colleague and I were sent out to our two sites that were impacted by the forest fires this summer. It was a 10 day trip that took us to Pinehouse Lake, SK and Fort Smith, NT. We flew into Edmonton, rented a truck and drove to Beauval, SK. This was the sunrise on Lac La Plonge.

The accommodations were a little sparse, there was no internet or television for a few days.

On our third day we drove to La Ronge to catch a charter flight to do an aerial assessment of our site. The plane was a Cessna 185 float plane, it was the first time I have taken off and landed on water.

The road and our site at the end of it. The black and brown areas are all fire damaged. Even though the plane ride was a little rough, it was an awesome opportunity.

On the Friday we headed back to Edmonton to catch our flight to Fort Smith. It was about 6:30 when we came across a herd of cows blocking the road. Eventually with a little honking and inching forward, they moved out of the way.

We only had a few days in Fort Smith. We saw this small group of bison on the way back to town on the Saturday.

There were three adults and a couple of younger ones.

Sunday was an off day for us, so we headed down to Mountain Rapids to see if we could see the nesting Pelicans. They were all on islands pretty far away.

Blackflies, Mosquitos, Ticks and the Bluenose II

Work had me down in Nova Scotia this past week. Our new site at Kejimkujik National Park is close to completion. At the park entrance they have two of the red muskoka chairs like they had at Gros Morne.

20150608_D7K_6417

Came across a Maritime Garter snake (Thamnophis sirtalis pallidulus).

20150608_D7K_6381

The Mersey River.

20150608_D7K_6414

I had good weather the first couple of days and then rain overnight on the second day, by Wednesday at noon the sun had come out.

20150608_D7K_6415

After all the trenching was filled I found this guy, I’m surprised he didn’t get buried or crushed by the heavy machinery.

20150609_D7K_6460

We headed into Luneburg for dinner on Tuesday night. There was an article that they had the Bluenose II out on the water the day before. Not sure if you have read anything about the boondoggle of the restoration of the ship. It is three years overdue and about $6 million over budget.

20150609_D7K_6465

It was in port and we were able to go aboard for free.

20150609_D7K_6466

The crew is new and the one guy I talked to had only been on board for two weeks. They are all training for the summer tourist season.

20150609_D7K_6473

20150609_D7K_6477

Nevertheless it was pretty cool to be aboard.

Wednesday it was back out to the park. A view of the forest near our new site.

20150610_D7K_6499

The drive back to Dartmouth Wednesday afternoon was sunny until I got close to Halifax and I ran into fog and rain. Here is one of the Christmas tree farms near the park. They are looking good for the upcoming season.

If Only Work Didn’t Get In The Way

Day 1

I spent the past week up in Fort Smith, NT for work. The weather was excellent for the week, about 15 degrees and sunny. Sunset was around 10:15 pm, but it stayed light after that. There was no shortage of wildlife on this visit. It is a full day of travel, leaving Toronto at 8:00 with a connection in Edmonton, switching to Northwestern Air for a two flight to Fort Smith.

Day 2

The first day out to the site we saw about 7 bears and a few bison. The first bear we saw was actually grazing with a couple of bison.

20150526_D7K_6038

The bison are still shedding their winter coats.

20150526_D7K_6040

20150526_D7K_6043

You can see the black bear in the background.

20150526_D7K_6044

Another black bear further down the road. Most of them would look up from grazing and then go back to what they were doing.

20150526_D7K_6048

This bear was spotted only about two kilometres from our site, just past the white sign on the left side of the road is a power corridor that leads to our site. Fortunately we didn’t have any visitors during the week.

20150526_D7K_6051

I had a meeting with a potential site operator in the evening, but after I finished, my colleague and I headed down to the river to see the pelicans. Those white specks in the rapids are White Pelicans.

20150526_D7K_6066

Due to the dry weather conditions the bugs haven’t been as bad as previous trips. I knew there was a trail down to the rapids, but the bugs have usually deterred any attempt at finding the trail.

20150526_D7K_6068

It’s only about a 20 minute walk down a steep trail to hit the river. There was still ice along the shore in the dense brush. The pelicans near the Rapids of the Drowned.

20150526_D7K_6071

American White Pelican (Pelecanus erythrorhynchos) nest on islands near the rapids, they then spend most of their time feeding in the waters below the rapids.

20150526_D7K_6128

Day 3

On the drive back to town we came across a herd of bison coming towards us. I pulled the truck over to the side of the road and waited for them to pass. Normally they are just grazing, but this group was on the move. There may have been wolves in the area.

20150527_D7K_6146

They had five calves with them.

20150527_D7K_6156

They were keeping an eye on us as they approached.

20150527_D7K_6159

20150527_D7K_6161

It was an amazing sight to see, every time I go it’s something different.

20150527_D7K_6162

Listen to the sound of the herd running past. As I turn to catch the stragglers I have to point the camera in the direction of the wind  so the sound is a little loud.

20150527_D7K_6164

Further back were more bison and a couple were running down the highway trying to catch up. Eventually they slowed down as they got closer to the truck.

20150527_D7K_6167

20150527_D7K_6170

20150527_D7K_6171

We stopped in at the Salt Plains, as we heard there were some Whooping Cranes in the area. Wood Buffalo National Park is the last remaining nesting grounds in the wild.

20150527_D7K_6176

The salt was the thickest and most abundant I have ever seen it.

20150527_D7K_6177

The Salt Plains are formed by water that has percolated through underground salt deposits left by an ancient sea around 390 million years ago. At the location of the Salt Plains, impermeable bedrock has forced the saline water to the surface. As the water evaporates, salt deposits are left behind.

20150527_D7K_6178

20150527_D7K_6179

20150527_D7K_6191

20150527_D7K_6197

On the previous friday a bear had gotten into a truck that was parked at the Salt Plains. The doors were closed but not locked. The bear opened the door and ripped up the front seat and then went for a coffee cup. The story made CBC news. I met the guy who owned the truck.

20150527_D7K_6198

Day 4

By the fourth day we were more selective about when we slowed right down for the bears and bison, but sometimes when they were right on the road you had no choice.

20150528_D7K_6199

They look so soft and fluffy.

20150528_D7K_6202

We met up with the herd that was running down the highway the day before. The calves were curious when the truck stopped.

On the way back to town we saw a mother and cub. I slowed the the truck figuring they would take off in the bush.

20150528_D7K_6251

But the hung around, here is the mother keeping a watchful eye on us.

20150528_D7K_6255

Eventually they decided to keep going.

20150528_D7K_6257

In the evening we headed out to Grosbeak Lake which is actually on the Alberta side of the park. It has often been compared to a moonscape.

20150528_D7K_6260

There were some bear prints in the mud, they last until the next rain and then disappear.

I was down in California last week for a meeting. It was held at the Asilomar Conference Grounds in Pacific Grove on the Monterey Peninsula. Here is the sunset from the second night.

The temperatures were about 20 degrees C, but we all know it’s 10 degrees colder by the lake (or ocean in this case).

I was back up to Wood Buffalo National Park to finally install the equipment at our new site. It was a long week, left on the Sunday and back the following Saturday. A view out of the Jetstream 32 aircraft from Edmonton to Fort Smith.

We had good weather for most of the days. In the past the bison I have seen have usually been by themselves. this time we came across herds while driving to the site.

There had to be at least 40 bison on both sides of the highway.

We came across the same herd the next morning, this guy was walking along the road as we drove by, we were close enough we could have slapped it on the ass as we drove by.

We also saw this wolf, we saw a fox and lots of black bears during the week.

The herd, it was an amazing site to see so many, they walk on both sides of the highway as well as the road.

We woke up to snow on the Wednesday morning, there was enough to brush off, but it only fell near town as the site didn’t have any snow when we got there, however there was some freezing rain for part of the morning.

On the last day I was heading back into town and saw this guy up ahead walking down the middle of the road.

As I slowed down, he wasn’t getting off the road for me. I came to a stop and waited for him to meander over to the shoulder eventually.
