Field, Ontario
The operator information session was held in Field, Ontario, it is 22 km north of
Sturgeon Falls and that's about 37 km west of North Bay. Population is about 600.
The Sturgeon River, water levels are lower than normal.
In 1979, around the same time of year there was a major flood of the river due to
the spring run-off. In the local store they have aerial photos showing the town
under water. This bridge was almost completely cover by water. The bridge is due
to be replaced this year.
North of North Bay
Back up in the North Bay area for a couple of days.
Still trying to finalize our site near Marten River. I'm giving a presentation tomorrow
morning to prospective operators for the site. The weather was good for once, I
think it's the first time I have had blue skies when I've been there.
This guy was curiously watching us.
This is the hole he scampered into as I got closer.
Here is his back door a few feet over.
He came back out when I was leaving.
Eastern Townships
A quick trip down to our site in Frelighsburg, Quebec to pick up a piece of equipment.
I saw this guy when I was walking back to the vehicle.
Looking south across Lake Champlain.
On the way back, I got stopped at the Valleyfield
Bridge that crosses the Beauharnois Canal.
Waiting for this ship to pass.
I was the third car in line from the crossing barrier.
A series of photos showing the ship pass under the bridge.
And finally on the other side.
Experimental Lakes
I spent a few days up at the Experimental Lakes Area this week. Flew into Winnipeg
and drove to the site east of Kenora. Stopped in Steinbach, Manitoba for some supplies.
Also known as the "Automobile City".
This is my ride for the week. The last 40 km to the camp is on gravel roads.
The lakes were still frozen, but the weather was good. Sunny and 10 degrees, a lot
nicer than it was back in Toronto.
Found this guy up near our site.
All of the lakes are numbered rather than named, not sure how many there in total.
There is no fishing in many of the lakes.
More of the scenery.
Going through Winnipeg on the way back.
Another Night, Another Hotel...
This has been a record trip for number of hotels. Tonight will be my fifth different
hotel on this trip. I'm in Corner Brook for the night and then flying back home
tomorrow. Staying at the Glynmill Inn. It was built in the 1920's.
Went for a walk around downtown Corner Brook. This is a pulp and paper town and
you can smell it in the air.
It is still winter here, it was -14 degrees with the wind chill and a lot of snow
on the ground.
