Runaway Truck
At the four corners in Frelighsburg, there was this pile of rubble on one of the
corners.
As you head into town you come down a hill with a 10% grade. I guess this is what
happens when you take it too fast and try to make the corner. Apparently the brakes
on the truck weren't working too well. The driver was killed, but nobody was in
the house at the time.
Next stop Quebec...
Heading down to Quebec tomorrow, will be down in Frelighsburg in the Eastern Townships.
Burnt Island
Spent the day out at the site today, Burnt Island is approximately 40 km south of
Gore Bay, it isn't really an island anymore, over the years it has silted over and
is now attached to Manitoulin Island. Lots of deer hunters out and about, easy to
to spot with their bright flourescent orange coats and hats, I guess the rifle in
their hands also gives them away. While we were leaving the site today we passed
a guy standing at the side of the road, waiting with his finger on the trigger.
I don't think he was too happy to see us driving by, around the corner we passed
his buddy, at least he lowered his rifle and waved.
Were staying at Gordon's Lodge on the edge of Gore Bay.
I found a sign here at the lodge. Not sure who would qualify as an authorized trespasser.
A view of Gore Bay.
The view from my room.
Manitoulin Island Bound
Made it up to Gore Bay on Manitoulin Island today. Drove from Toronto to Sturgeon
Falls and then another 50 km north to stake out a new site.
Brian spraying one of the stakes we put in.
It was cold and snowing off and on.
Something about wandering in the bush during deer hunting season makes the safety
vests seem like a good idea.
From there it was on to Sudbury and then Gore Bay. After we got back on Highway
17 we stopped for gas, the pickup we pulled up beside had a couple of deer thrown
in the back.
Saturna Island Sunset
Left the island around 6:00 in the evening, this is what the sky looked like at
5:00 pm.
By 6:30 the moon was rising.
Moonview
The view from our cottage, it looks east towards the mainland.
What would be a trip without some deer photos. There hasn't been too many deer hanging
around the site. Today there were three of them.
After I took this one, it turned to square off against me.
It has been a full moon at night. This photo was taken around 6:30pm at the site.
A closer view of the moon.
Saturna Island Bound...
Monday we arrived at Saturna Island for a week. We took the Queen of Mayne ferry
and had a front row view.
Saturna Island coming into view, it is the largest of the Southern Gulf Islands,
but the least populated.
Looking south to Washington State.
Another one of those signs that don't make a lot of sense. What is a sound powered
telephone. Does that mean you have to yell really loud?
This float plane landed and was taking off when we were approaching the island.
Either way it's an Island...
My next trip is to an island. I will either be on Manitoulin Island next week or
if that trip is postponed then it's Saturna Island the week after next. Stay tuned.
Backroads Ontario
I was in Westport, Ontario last night and this morning. Westport in about 40 minutes
north of Kingston. I stayed at the Cove Country Inn, it is across the road from
the Upper Rideau Lake.
Some of the ladybugs in the building.
I'm not sure what the driving rules are on these back roads. I thought driving on
the right was a given.
Some of the many lakes in the area.
Catching the tail end of the fall colours.
This convenience store is near Perth Road Village. You don't see too many of these
signs in Mississauga. Deer hunting season opens on Monday.
A close-up of the sign. Nothing like a hot coffee and some ammunition.
Just in case you were wondering what they had to offer on the other side.
